This was a lot of fun. I can go into the details of the recording if anyone's interested. Just hit play to listen to the clip.

... is distance Am I the only one who moused over the red part thinking I'd find a link to some hot new plugin, only to feel totally, incredibly, astoundingly stupid after a short period of brow-furrowing? So, is this distance compressor thing VST or DirectX? Is there a demo available so I can try ...

Re: my new favorite compressor
Saying that people are "trying to do" anything is too general, and misleading and is instantly questionable. There are plenty of times where one would not hear the pile of compression on something, because it is done correctly, with the right tool for the job. Yep. I was making some big generalizat...

... is distance No it won't make stuff sound "in your face", but nothing knocks down peaks like moving the mic further away from the source. A little room ambience can often make a sound more exciting, which is usually what people are trying to do when they pile on the compression. Distance and comp...

The Bass Driver is very cool. If you primarily need something for recording, get that!

I swear I saw her walking past REI the other night. At least I think it was REI. Man, I was chasing my friggin bus for about five city blocks so I was all over the place. That Bus friggin Hoobastanked me! Haha. I guess we should arrive at a firm definition. Mine would be... Hoobastank: - To subject...

Hey, is Idaho the band that plays 4-string guitars?? I think my old band played a gig with them in LA years ago (Dreamland in Silverlake, I think). The band I saw was really good. I guess I could just go to the site and find out-- PC Yes. That's the one. It's pretty much just Jeff Martin's project ...

Re: YOU'RE the engineer, what would you do?
Piccolo snare toss for distance. Proceed from there. Seriously: fuck a piccolo. Replace that with something at least five inches deep and you could probably get away with one mic, drummer depending. As a rule I don't like piccolo snares either. Then I found one that sounds really great. With the ri...

Re: YOU'RE the engineer, what would you do?
Your task: Record a loud rock and roll drummer **ONLY DRUMS** in a high ceiling'ed loft style apartment The first thing I would do is is warn the neighbors and make sure you have a block of time that is cool. The best way to get good drums sounds is to experiment. You will get a lot of "use mic 'a'...
