I've always used external drives for audio. I was looking at the macbook vs imac, and the processor and max RAM are the same, which is what started this thought process. I lugged the iMac for location recording a few times, the laptop would be more convenient for that. Back at home, I could still ha...

Supposedly I'm getting a check next week. With a external drives for music and backup and a bigger monitor and real keyboard... Macbook could work. And a bigger internal drive. I don't remember how much space PT etc took up last time, and I hadn't gotten around to installing Reason (which I don't us...

macbook or imac
My house got broken into about a month ago, and a 20" iMac got stolen, among other things. When the insurance co. pays, I was thinking about another imac, but really the macbook looks pretty close in terms of speed and RAM. The tiny hard drive sucks, of course. Anyone doing all their recording and m...

I got broken into today. They took my Tranzport -- I guess cuz it was small, in plain sight, and looked digital. They took my iMac -- recent G5, 2.5 gig RAM, etc. But left the external HD's with current audio in progress... YAY FOR CRACKHEADS!! They left guitars. Took a "Spirit PowerPad 4 channel mi...

I have a Guild fretless that sounds pretty good for the fretless type stuff. But when I play alt country/(not) bluegrass stuff with one particular band, I want a 41" scale length and upright position. For some reason it's MUCH easier to play and sing when playing an upright than playing an electric ...

This is mostly a live sound question, I guess. When I'm playing my old Kay live in a club, picked up with a piezo (and occasionally a MXL 603 stuffed in an F-hole wrapped in foam), run on the verge of feedback through a 2x10 bass amp, it doesn't sound much like an 1800's German carved double bass in...

Electric upright bass
Anybody heard an electric upright that sounds good? Sounds like an upright (you would have to know what the real thing sounds like to answer that), not like a nice fretless electric bass? I'm thinkin' about getting one, and ditching one o' my 2 uprights. Any experience as far as sound quality? Playa...

Thanks. When I pull the fader all the way up it seems like there's still not quite enough OH there. The mics were Josephson c42s, the pre's were a Midas small format board. Fortunately there's a room mic, a Tape Op ribbon, that was recorded a little hotter. I may not wrassle too much with the OH and...

Overheads recorded low
What do y'all do when you get something to mix from somebody else, and the overheads are recorded at a really low volume level? Compress lightly with a shitload of makeup gain?
In pro tools, which is a new-ish thing for me.
Suggestions appreciated.

Er. Don't marry anyone who considers music frivolous or immature. That should be a no-brainer. I married a singer/songwriter the first time out, it didn't last (well, 10 years, but still didn't last). We had some of the same vices, like buying instruments now and then, and we did gigs together in ba...
