Re: Stereo Buss Compression

If I'm cahining compressors, I don't like using two of the same unit. It always just sounds to me like you're lowering the threshold or something. I don't even like to use the same compressors (or EQs) in tracking and mixing. For example, if I use a Distressor on a vocal during tracking, I won't use...

Re: Anybody in Bloomington IN?!?!?!?

I have a friend there whose wife is in grad school at IU studying clarinet. His name is Matthew Everhart (her name is Jennifer) and Matt is an excellent bass player and recording engineer. I beleve he's also a Tape Op subscriber. Drop me a line and I'll give you a contact number.

Re: what's your favorite multi-pattern mic?

I've heard that the Studio Projects mics can be real inconsistent. Apparently, their quality control is slightly better than many of the Chinese-made mics currently avaiable and if you get a good one, they're great. I tried a C3 on a session about a year ago and didn't dig it at all. Have you heard ...

I believe Bill Putnam used cork to float the floors at United Audio in Chicago.

For what it's worth, I prefer the sound of class AB circuits, especially for recording drums.

Re: cd buring problem?

If you're not looking for higher than 48kHz, Full Compass was recently blowing out some 8 channel A-D and D-A converters by Panasonic. I was curious if they were the same converters used in their DAT decks. Those sound GREAT!

Re: what's your favorite multi-pattern mic?

Yeah, all around, the 4050 is next to impossible to beat. Just the other day I was doing an acoustic singer/guitar player recording. I had planned to use my 4050s as close mics (I usually do a Blumlien thing for that) and so I had my 414s up as an MS pair in the room. The problem was that this guy p...

What exactly are you wanting to record with your new mic purchase?

Be sure to keep thinking that way so you don't ever buy anything new again. And keep listening to the Beatles, 'cause as awesome as they are, nothing else is ever worth listening to.

Re: Some guys are just plain cool - Tchad Blake

Check out the new album by "The Bad Plus." Quasi-avant jazz piano trio stuff. A few nice cover tunes, too. I heard it before I knew Tchad had mixed it. It's beautiful. Alot more transparent then some of his more well-known work, but some nice subtle "touches of Tchad" in there, too. I believe he rec...

Re: Stereo Buss Compression

In high-dollar land, love the Manley Variable MU. Rock-solid stereo imaging and nice "color". In budget land, the ART PRO VLA is a surprisingly nice color choice if you need a little thickening. You can't hit it too hard, though or you'll get serious pumping. (I want to get a second unit so I can pu...

Re: replicating digital EQ with analog EQ

And on different consoles, and in different rooms, and... Sounds like a neat "experiment," though, and if you have the time, you should do it to see what you learn. You'll probably gain alot of insight into how both your plug ins and the Amek work. Probably more so with the plug ins, since you're mo...

Re: Wicked HUM!!!

So much to say, so little time... The short of it is (pardon the pun) that you are likely doing damage to your amp. The headphone out of your keyboard, although not very strong, is in fact a powered output. You are therefore sending a powered signal INTO your amp. That is a no-no. Even if you could ...
