Re: Mic Signal Path Upgrade for Home Studio

The pre's you're talking about are really sweet but here's an alternative you may not have looked at, check the spec's. The ART DMPA has excellent spec's and a long list of features that lend flexibility (one of your needs). They're too long to list so I'm posting a URL for you. I have friends that ...

Re: getting a mix to translate

Try a cheap pair of headphones; like the kind that come free when you buy a new Walkman. Also, what kind of headphones are you talking about? Some Makes and models are just wayyyyyyy too critical so you have to take the translation with a grain of salt. Headphones can be very deceiving and you might...

Re: Recommended outboard reverb

The Alesis MidiVerb 4 is a lot of fun with a powerful engine that does some very cool trix for $199. Personally I like it. I sometimes use my Behringer Virtualizer Pro 2024P for Reverb and you can snag one of those for $179. I find it useful. You could also consider the Mackie DFX6 Mixer. For $189 y...

Re: home-made Ebow, or anything (cheap) similar?

I used an EBow for 5 years on my Telecaster that sported a sweeeeeeeeeet Duncan Little 59er in the bridge pos and never lost a micron of attack, sustain or tone.

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

Brian, what's up with removing the HF Boost discs on your 319's? Did you do that yourself? Or did you have it done? And are there any other electronics that need to be removed along with the disc? (e.g. cap's?)

Re: Your Motivation

If I didn't play the music that's in my head it would accumulate until my head exploded. And I owe it to society to be as sane as possible when I'm out in public, so I play my music, get it out (the music, that is) and I feel better. Everyone's happier that way. I Record my music because it's fun, i...

Re: Cheap Gear

I agree with everyone else here, except the "sex with sheep" part. Whatever happened to "sex with cows"? They don't complain as much. Inexpensive gear gets ya going and up and running. Now you know exactly what kind of gear you're looking for to take that next "upgrade" step. Plus you've gained a lo...

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

Personally I wouldn't recommend the V63 although it's a tempting price, especially with the shockmount. The V67 is the replacement for the V63 and it's a much better mic. I think the real deal on MXL's at MF right now is the MXL 2003/603s combo for $169. That's a killer deal. The 2003 is very nice a...

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

I have an MXL 990 and have really enjoyed it for some applications. For vocals it's imperative to use a tube pre to warm it up a bit. The general concensus is correct that it's "Toppy", but it's toppy in a very open and airy way. the 6kHz to 7kHz range is beautiful on this mic as is 9kHz to 10kHz (a...

Re: suffering prematurely from studio suck?

I know this post is a little late in the game but I just found this board and like it. Jason, Have you had any luck? it almost sounds to me like you've got some great recordings but they just need that finishing touch. Plug in Ozone 3 by Izotope and let the difference blow your mind. I didn't read a...
