When I read (in the liner notes to Permanent 1995 ) that Joy Division was seeking to find "indescribable beauty in absolute ugliness," it kind of stands to reason that Ian's vocal anomaly was intentional. being an enormous fan of JD/NO I had the opportunity to visit Manchester in 2005 and I think t...

my first compressor was the Alesis 3060 (I think thats the correct number). That box looked so cool next to my Alesis LX20 and Alesis Mixer..... did it help with anything??... now to your specific question about EL8 vs Germ. I would agree 100 per cent with those that recommend the distressor. Especi...

Best snare sound achieved with both heads removed from shell, an imaginary surface is visualized and tell the drummer to verbally make a "smack" sound. Concurrently a mic is positioned in the control room while the assistant engineer takes a wet shammy cloth and whips it across the rear of a doll of...

Joel Thanks for reply. I wanted to get an overall opinion of this unit for the purpose of tracking. I have currently an EL8, Germ. Comp., and a RNC. So a comparison to these would be especially insightful. Also are the matched mastering pair with Sterling Mods able to be used independently as mono t...

Chandler LTD-2 Compressor Review (issue 28)
Can anyone help? I am trying to track down some info on this unit and according to Larry's notes it was reviewed in issue 28 (or maybe 29). I started TO with issue 36 and Books I, II only go to Issue 20. Chandler for some reason does not include the review on their website (but has other TO reviews)...

check out elliott smith's first LP. Similar set-up. nice recordings. (at least listenable). I would say mic placement is pretty critical chop. Proximity effects to various mics. Understanding vari-speed control and its creative applications. Bouncing tracks. levels. overall workflow... using E.Q., p...

I would say at least 90 per cent of the participants on these boards will have learned the basics of the art of recording through the portastudio path. If nothing else, learn your chops well on that unit, after a few critical tape drop-outs from punch-in recording and the occasional eaten master tap...
