For butterflies I usually use a lavalier mic. The trick is to attached it right when they come out of the cocoon.

I think it's always best to let the band know what's going on. Just make it clear that you're not recording unless you say "rolling".

Oldham has consistently made albums that I enjoy, with only a few that I did not dig (the tortoise collaboration).
