Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Steinberg has a February sale, so I got VST Connect Pro 5. Been testing it for a few hours today, learning how to do remote recordings. I still have a day or two before I feel confident about it. Lots of small code parts that need to be "just so" for it to work correctly. But, fun, once it works, as...

I do have a 414 B-ULS. Maybe I will try that with the pad.
I love my pair of BULS.

If you haven't recorded them, another tip: Make them loud in their headphone mix. That will keep them from leaning into the microphone to hear themselves better. ;)

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

I've had good luck with Sennheiser MD421s and 441s. Also the old trusty AKG 414, but with the -10dB pad on.

As always, listen to the sax and the player, put the mic where it will pick up the best balanced sound and not get blown out by a loud passage.

Re: Roland SH-101+MoogerFooger MF-102 pedal

Check to see if you have a "DC coupled" output on your converter. Those allow for CV voltages to be output directly. Motu has some. Also, the CV In / Gate are very common synthesizer control voltages, -5 to +5 Volts. If you have a synth, see if it has those types of ins and outs. Try the LFO out of ...

Re: Quirky Mastering Situation

+1 on Karl's suggestion. I wonder if YouTube has a built in HPF that prevents your speaker from overloading the way your master seems to be. The YouTube conversion does have filtering, ant it probably is on both ends of the spectrum, lowering the extreme low and high frequencies in order that the C...

Re: How to structure a multi-part session

Very helpful, Nick. When you say "additional tracks", do you mean you're adding some compression/eq to kick and snare, or setting up a drum bus? I sometimes will create a group buss, send a submix of the drumkit, and compress and EQ it, and record it. Especially if there is an exotic or rare compre...

Re: How to structure a multi-part session

When I do recordings of bands, which are like this, multi day, I always always always spend the first day(s) getting the recording sounds. Drums first if possible, followed by the basic bass, rhythm guitar, keyboards, and at least a scratch vocal. Depending on their budget and time, I try to nail th...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

My really great 2Ubes VTX tube mic preamp. Made by hand by my friend Larry Janus. Crazy good, and it has WiFi, so I can change the settings from my phone while adjusting a microphone in the other room or across the room. Has a great sound. At some point, I'll be getting a 2nd one. Great on electric ...

Re: Drum OH's, only

I'd recommend some AKG 451s. Or AKG 414s. The trick is to listen to the placement, so you get the kick and snare in the middle of your Stereo image. After that, you can EQ and compress a bit until the kit sounds balanced. I don't like ribbons on percussions, they can and do tend to smush transients,...

Re: Quirky Mastering Situation

I'd ask this:

What is the best playback system you have, and can you somehow play what the ME sent back to you on that?
What other high quality material can you play back?
Is this BT speaker the only thing you have to play back stuff with?

Re: DAW Tracking Levels too hot?? Looking for guidance & resources

However, I see now that you can calibrate "0 db = _____ dBFS" !!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD HAVE IN BLANK "____dBFS"!!! Hi Trodden, Here, I have my consoles "above zero dB" set to match on my converters. My A&H console has +16 dB metering peak at the mix buss, and the direct outs are a little hott...
