Most of the big rental houses in NYC are gone now, the markets changed that much in the last 5-10-15 years. I'd start buy calling some of your local studios and see who's got what around. Maybe you can either rent the gear directly or book a few hours and see what it's all about in their shop. Barin...

I think the 121's are the way to go if you're putting it on amps/cabs. Right on, but what else do you use them on? They're a little dark for piano, vocals & drum overheads/room. Brass & woodwinds, sure...I record A LOT of guitar and they do sound great there but I'm just as happy with lots of other...

The price increases you are seeing, and will be seeing, are mostly because of the cost of metal work. The price of metal has gone up dramatically of late. Also, anything made with petroleum has been going up. This includes foam for cases etc... All of this is mostly due to the success of Chinese ma...

Remember when Mixerman used to talk about recording? Yeah. Those were the days. Now he's too fucking busy with that movie deal to do any real recording. I hear he was miffed that they rewrote the true ending of the diary to something that was "more entertaining" and would make for a better movie th...

The biggest questions banging inside of my head would be, do they like the mixes? And then, how important is any kind of level? 'Cause it'll never be able to get super loud, like "big boy" loud. That's not such a bad thing IMO! But if they want level then getting any is going to be pretty rough to d...

I'd check the pinch roller first. Is it soft & pliable or hard as a rock?

If it's hard as a rock it'll need to be replaced.

I've got a weird one... Tascam MA-8. I think that was it...one rack space, 8-micamp thing they made in the early-mid 90's. Just 8 inputs with gain & global phantom power. I had one that I used for toms & other stuff WAAAAAAAAAAY back in the day and most of that stuff still sounds pretty decent to my...

But I don't get this 10:1 thing, everything I compress that much sounds like @ss. I'm probably doing it wrong. It is a different kinda animal and doesn't work on everything. But yeah, sometimes it's good to stand hard on the compressor like that. Whatever it takes. Try some longer releases & a slow...

I have a moderate understanding of it all...

Enough that I can usually get the point across to some rhythmically challenged rock & roll meathead anyway!
