Re: Tube substitutions for a tiny little amp: 12av6, 50c5, 3
OK, I'll try the 12au6's--but where on earth could I find a plug-in silicon rectifier substitute? Are there sources for such things? I would love to try recapping the amp but I'm a little nervous about getting a bad shock--do I have to worry about discharging the filter cap on such a small amp?

Tube substitutions for a tiny little amp: 12av6, 50c5, 35w4
OK, this is for all the amp geeks. I got a little practice amp on eBay that sounds cool but distorts way too early for my taste. I want more headroom! The tubes are old radio transmitter tubes: 12av6, 50c5, 35w4. I'm going to get myself some NOS RCA tubes and try those, but perhaps there are substit...

Re: Loveless is quiet...and loud
I'm another dipshit who knew about My Bloody Valentine for a dozen years but only bought Loveless last month. God, what an idiot. It is an amazing record of course and doesn't sound at all dated. It is simply the product of a perfect extended moment--seems like everything he did, it worked, even whe...

Re: other recording magazines that you guys read?
How about Signal to Noise? It isn't a recording magazine but talks about music in an interesting and innovative way. Also, the best magazine in the entire history of the whole world, Weird NJ. Seriously. It is the greatest thing ever. Comes out every six months and is about... weird things in New Je...

Re: Miking Brushed Drums (on a budget of course)
I know I risk overwhelming my own posting, but I gotta tell Ion Records that I LOVE LOW, and their setup is exactly what I was going for. I have a family that requires a bit of quiet (my wife & I work at home) and so whacking on a full kit was not an option--but for a certain atmosphere this setup o...

I recorded myself in stereo moving my hands around in a pan of water, and it sounds real cool on headphones. If you like, check it out here:

Re: Miking Brushed Drums (on a budget of course)
Okay, these are excellent suggestions--esp. the one about close miking the snare and tom and then overdubbing cymbals, because I AM NOT A DRUMMER!, and this would cover up my incompetence. I will try everything & report back on this thread in a week or two--but please!, if you have more ideas, post ...

Miking Brushed Drums (on a budget of course)
So I have gotten sick of the sound of my drum machines in the home studio and am putting together a little drum kit to play, on selected songs, with brushes. Anybody have any recording suggestions? I am going to try a pair of SM57s on booms crossed over my head. I've also got an Oktava MK319, a Stud...
