You could try just using spaced pair on the whole band. Put the drums in the middle of the room amps on the sides. This works well for quick demos, with decent condenser mics. Not sure how well it word work with dynamics into a portastudio. I just got a 16 channel mackie used from my local guitarcen...

Your board has inserts on its first four channels. Those should be able to be used as outputs with a TS cable plugged in half way. Just starting out with my own stuff.

First studio I worked in had many of those things you mention, Hulu. Including a glass pipe, miscellaneous mens magazines, but mostly broken stuff needing to be fixed. Stuff that just didn't work or sound good enough to get fixed. Sort of the survival of the fittest in that drawer.

I swear apple lossless used to make the files bigger than wave....
