Yep, I agree, the Apex ones are pretty ugly - I have one of their 205s (the smaller version which gets better reviews, actually), and it's quite good. The mount on those is super cheesy. I just like ribbons, though, especially for digital recording -- they seem to take EQ well, and don't have that s...

"pointing" an omni
Just a quick question for the experts here. I have been using a small condenser omni mic as a drum overhead. I have the mic pointed down at the kit, but never really thought about why I positioned it that way. Does where it's pointed make any difference at all if it's an omni mic?

Germanium transistors are apparently more sensitive to temperature changes too -- the silicon fuzzes are more stable in that regard, which might be another reason why they got adopted in addition to their better availability. I have both, and both are good -- my Germanium fuzz (MJM Brit Bender) seem...

I think silicon is definitely the way to go for that type of fuzz. You might try John Lyons at Basic Audio -- there are some good youtube demos of his pedals. I bought a WEM Pep Rush version from him this spring and it's been great for the kinds of sounds you're describing. One thing about fuzz is t...

Hi Justin, I read you over at SonicState all the time. Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I plead guilty to having a double-standard of sorts when it comes to profanity. I read the Paul Leary article when it first came out, and remember wincing at the time. Of course his repeated use of the word was ...

After some thought, here's a simple editorial protocol that might help (sorry if this double-posts, I'm not sure why it's happening): Profanity is like harmonic distortion. It has its uses. Slurs, racial slurs, ethnic slurs, cultural slurs, however, are like digital clipping. The signal has crossed ...

Language discussion in Letters section
Dear Larry and the rest of the editorial staff, I am grateful for the fellow tape-oppers who chose to write in and express their dismay at the use of the "R" word in a recent issue, which is referred to in the Letters section of the most recent issue (95). Their sense of consideration speaks to ever...
