Hey Marc, Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure what your question is? Are you talking about costs or voltages? Cost of the PSU board I think is under $10 for the PCB and you could knock one out for around $20-$30 in parts excluding the power transformer. If you question was related to running vol...

Pete, You don't blow your own trumpet, you just hold it in the winds... Hah hah But seriouslly, I can't praise Pete's Greens enough. I have built a few over the last year and just completed a 4 channel version of his earlier work (sans metering, on board switches and low cut filter). If you are look...

A DIY pre amp for the masses!
Hey Guys, I can hardly contain my excitement over this new kit! I?ve been a fan of Joe Malone?s ( www.jlmaudio.com ) Gear for quite some time and use one of his power supplies in my Telefunken/Neumann Rack, and recently used a pair of his ?Go Between? kits on a pair on Spectra Sonics 101 Pre-amps, a...

Enjoy them! I own a pair of 101's, great pre-amps, warm, smooth, rich. The 502's are also great, a passive EQ that uses a 101 for make up gain. The 101 and later the 110 cards were used an various parts of the old SS consoles and in the heart of the famous 610 Compressor/Limiter. There is a thread o...

How do I test for 48V? Just find the spot where it comes into the strips and strap on a Voltage meter's positive lead, and ground the negative to something? I guess that's pretty easy. Do you know where I should test? You got it! You are checking for DC, after rectification. Find the ground plane, ...

Hey Joe, Thanks for the kind words on my rack (that sounds so bad...) Yours look great, those Melcors look so sweet. I want to add a pair one day, too many pieces, so little time!!! I sold me Calrec EQ to pay for the engraved panels and racks, one for the Spectratone, a 4 Channel Green (Peter's Amek...

Zywot66, I like the Spectra Sonics alot, except for the ground hum, which i'll banish as soon as I'm done with these 4 AMEK style pres I'm building (building done, all working, now onto racking). I racked the SS's with a pair of the Scott Hamptone's JFET Pre design he offered up in Tape Op a while b...

While not a PM1000 (thought mine arrive in a few days) I have just done some A/B?s between Epcos/Phillips Polys VS WIMA MKS Polys in 4 channels of Green Pre?s I just built. I built 2 with the Phillips and 2 with the WIMA and I can say I TOTALLY agree with the WIMA?s having ?AIR?, the high end is ver...

Not to hijack the thread but since Joe mentioned Quad 8, check out the CA-227 kit that is offered up by Ken @ www.orphanaudio.com. I've not built one, thought it is tempting, but I'm broke and have a bunch of other DIY/Racking projects to complete, including my Spectra sonics 101's which are driving...

so its suppose to clean it up the pre and make it like a grace design 201 clean or a m-audio dmp3 clean? I have no idea!!! LOL I'm not familar with the topology of either of those pres (though I used to have a DMP2). But you will end up with pre that is clean witah good transient reponse, which is ...

Not to get too technical but to clear up a bit of History on the 1272 vs 1073. The Pre Amp in the 1073 is actually the 1290, the 1073 is the whole channel strip including the EQ, much like the 1081 which also has a 1290 pre. It is better to compare the 1272 with the 1290, not a 1073. But as A-Barr r...

Hey Guys, I?ve chatted to Matt Newport and his mods are extensive in comparison to what was offered up on the forum. He basically takes the stock PR8 and reworks it to be similar to Pete?s Greens (Amek Mozart/9098) and the SSL9K in topology (hence the reference). I think if you are not a modder or h...

Eddie it is modular, just not in the sense of your Topaz. Inside the board are individual boards bolted in banks of 8, all through hole, no SMD, for easy servicing. Once you get inside the board you should be able to take the channels out that need work, box up and carry on working as per normal bar...

Hey Brian, I'll answer on behalf of Peter since he is the one who gave me the heads up on how to do it for a panel I did for a Buss Compressor I was working on. It is done with a transfer paper known as Fotocal paper here in South Africa, but the commercial name for it in the US/UK is Lazertran. Bas...
