Re: Cymbals Eat Snare
are the cymbals super washy? what cymbals/hats are being used? i had a drummer that played these paiste dark energy something or others and they were the washiest cymbals i've ever heard they drowned out everything. i hated them. The cymbals did seem pretty washy, yeah. 14" Zildjian new beat hats, ...

Cymbals Eat Snare
I've been battling this recurring issue for quite awhile now, and I'm wondering if anyone here has dealt with the same thing. Snare drum sounds great when played by itself, or when the drummer is playing closed hi-hats or riding the floor tom. Nice and big and open. As soon as he opens up the hats o...

Re: 16 more channels of analog compression
I remember Steve Albini saying the RNC is as good as other compressors several times its cost, for whatever that’s worth.

Re: Space Echo RE-201 Questions
Good advice here, thanks. I received the tape loops and new felts from Echofix, and did some quick A/B tests. The new felt for the tension arm is much thinner than what was on there originally, and I couldn't adjust the arm enough to keep constant tension on the tape. This resulted in fewer (and inc...

Re: Need Help With DIY Diffuser Design...
I built a couple of these to get rid of flutter echo between the floor and ceiling. Super easy to build using 1/2" plywood, and works like a charm.

Re: Space Echo RE-201 Questions
Thanks for the replies. I swapped out the Scotch loop for one made from an 8-track tape I found at a thrift store. The tape looks to be in good shape, but the repeats aren't nearly as strong as they are with the Scotch 150. The result of a difference in tape thickness maybe? Anyway, I'm going to ord...

Re: Clip-On Tuners?
+1 on the Snarks. I’ve got a basic $20 one that is surprisingly good. It has to be on vibration sensor mode though, rather than the internal mic which I haven’t had great luck with.

Space Echo RE-201 Questions
Hey all, I'm reluctant to start a new thread on a topic that's likely been beat to death here, but I've got a couple questions I haven't found definitive answers for. I recently acquired an RE-201 for a decent price, by today's standards. Never owned a tape delay before. It didn't come with a tape, ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
FWIW, the tech 21 VTB is really good also; a lot of guys at talkbass apparently use it on their boards, but I find it great for recording DI, and it can be Ebogged for less than a hundo. I like all of the "character" pedals, tho', and even their clones ( ex ., Joyo). But the one I want is the "Tech...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I broke down and bought one last year after discovering that it's pretty much the only mic that doesn't make me hate my voice. It does a wonderful job of handling all my sibilance while still sounding present. I know I should be trying it out everywhere but it lives on vocals. Maybe I need a second...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Finally bought an EV RE20. Total impulse buy, but I've wanted one for a long time and got a decent deal on a factory repack. Also bought an Undertone Audio Vari-Cap cable. Pricey for a cable, yes, but I just did an A-B comparison with 4 different TS cables which I use regularly in my studio and was ...

Re: Cabling: What's the cheapest 24 channel TRS snake you'd buy?
Gotta ask: To the extent you hear differences, are they qualitative? Quantifiably better or worse? Have you A-B'd? (ABX'd?) Lemme note that I think differences needn't always be necessarily audible - feel/response and even confidence are certainly valid concerns. You haven't heard differences in gu...

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....
I just sold one of those dynamount robotic mic stand things. Fell in love with the idea of it, used it twice in as many years. If something in my studio sits unused for a year or so, chances are it’s going on Reverb/eBay. Microphones being the exception. My obsession with microphones is not a health...

Re: DI bass and guitar
I mostly just record on my own, and I’ve been digging guitars through a DI lately. Usually through my Hamptone tube preamp, and always going through some combination of pedals first. That’s kind of my setup when I’m writing at home on my loop station, so maybe it’s a demo-itis thing, but I’m liking ...

Re: Neve flavor
The only DI I've ever used where I felt happy using the track as the main representation of the bass in the mix was through either a Hamptone JFET or the HVTP. Scott nailed it with those. Otherwise, zzzzzzzzz. Sansamp is sometimes cool too. In my previous post, I'm definitely talking about mic'ing ...
