I've always thought of the Fender Twin as the ideal amp for playing Rhodes through. Much prefer smaller tube amps for guitar, but still want to track down a Twin someday to play/record my Rhodes through. I think the ice pick frequency seems to 'work' with Rhodes. Adds a bit of sparkle (as opposed to...

Cool, let us know how it goes... all the new Lenovos don't have TI firewire chips anymore (I believe they use Ricoh now), so I'm curious to hear if it works for you stock - or with the Cables Unlimited card.

Seriously, it's not as big of deal as it used to be. Stick with a major brand like Toshiba or HP that has decent specs and you should be fine. If the onboard firewire bus has issues you can always just get a good PCMCIA (aka cardbus) firewire adapter and be done with it. Really. People have given e...

I'm using this one: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP5 The model before the one that is out currently. Ah, I suspected that... that's an older model that has been replaced in their product line-up. The current model no longer has the TI firewire (and thus the reported incompatibilities with soundcards...

Sounds like you've got what we would call here in the Midwest a 'Michigan' basement. I used to record in a room like that years ago. The treatment approach is a good one - get some rigid fiberglass (Owens Corning 703, for one) and make up some DIY bass traps, etc. Lots of info if you google for that...

1) The original white Mac Book. This model has a TI firewire chipset, and 1 GB ram stock - this was in production roughly until last fall. I take that back. I've read more about this, and apparently even Apple abandoned the TI firewire chipset a year+ ago. Now all Mac laptops are using the Lucent (...

Thanks for the reply, ctmsound... I'm considering getting the MacBook and just running Cubase w/Bootcamp and XP. However, I did a bit more research on these white Macbooks, and it appears there are TWO different flavors (at least two, I should say): 1) The original white Mac Book. This model has a T...

Thrilled to see these responses, thanks! It's certainly a start to finding out what works... Sadly, both the Dell 9400 and HP zv6130 are years old and discontinued. My research (listen to me! I sound like a grad student with this purchase) has also unearthed a few other older and no-longer produced ...

Yeah, I don't want to get a Mac... I'm a PC user. I've heard even the newer Macs have issues in this area, but I'll leave that for some enterprising Mac recordist to research. I still can't believe there isn't SOMEONE on the whole Internet using a current PC laptop successfully for this. Anyone? Aj

No current off-the-shelf PC laptop w/working DAW firewire?!?

I've spent hours googling, sifting thru message boards, and company support forums. And I simply cannot find anyone who can recommend a specific, currently available off-the-shelf PC laptop (model number please!) that works well with a firewire soundcard interface (RME Fireface, Echo Audiofire, Motu...

I've been curious about something with that same set-up - can you use all 18 inputs and 18 outputs simultaneously?

So tempted... I'm in Ann Arbor area, so this is close for me. But, I have: 1) No room for it. 2) No idea how to maintain such a thing. 3) No need for it, so it would just sit in storage for a few years until I figured out how to incorporate it into my already pretty complete set-up. Thus, I shall do...

This is a poignant essay about Doug Hopkins, ex-Gin Blossoms songwriter who killed himself with a .38 several years ago. Very appropriate to this discussion, sort of tries to find some shred of reason in the unexplainable mess that is suicide. The story was published in a local Detroit paper, so mos...

I have an H2. It's terrific for what it is. Great things about it: - It sounds great, good enough for pro work. - It has four mics, so you can get both a stereo pair of what it's aimed at + a stereo pair pointing away at the room. - If you switch it to Mp3 mode (instead of wav), you get literally DA...
