Strangely, a friend of mine brought this exact subject up to me this afternoon. He said Kurt Ballou talked about it in Tape Op at some point. Don't know what issue it was but I suspect Kurt couldn't have been in THAT many editions of the magazine.

I started using Beat Detective in the way Nick described and found it to be much quicker than using Identify Beat. Beat Detective is available in Pro Tools 9, both 9HD and non-HD. I don't know if it's in non-HD versions earlier than 9. If you try this method you'll want to be on Bar | Beat Marker Ge...

I can fully appreciate the desire to track at home, but you also wouldn't have to spend $2k on studio time to go to a nice room to cut vocals. I can think of at least a few nice joints in the bay area you could book for less than $500/day including engineer.

Also, for what it's worth to anyone considering the RE20 and snare and stuff: Jon was super easy to deal with. The 4050 he sold me was as described, packed well and shipped promptly.

Been on a major Torche kick lately. Excited to see them again next month. I've also been listening to Chelsea Wolfe's album over and over the last few days. Eagerly looking forward to her acoustic album coming out in October.

The idea of inviting fans on stage to perform is very cool, but the way Amanda Palmer has gone about it in this circumstance is shameful.

This cannot be overstated! Given 2 quality machines, I would choose the one with a remote every time.

Import session data is hugely helpful

If you're interested in a more "academic" way of learning I have had very good luck using a freeware application called Genius. You could make flash cards for key commands you want to retain and run through it from time to time quizzing yourself.

If it ain't broke....

If you're sonically happy with the gear you've got, my recommendation would be to find a way to set up the ergonomics in a way you're happy with as opposed to replacing gear you're into into with new stuff.
