Re: Storm Brewing Over TapeOp Subscription Policy?

Goddamn those bastards for giving us a free magazine.
For real. The next guy that gives me something for free is gonna get his ass kicked.

Re: What did you work on tonight?

I re-tracked a bunch of vocals, added the final instrument for a song I've been working on for two weeks now (a piano), finished a painting (that I just sold for three hundred bucks!), then I ate a peanut butter sandwich. All of those went well. Especially the sandwich.

Re: mellow mid-fi music

I agree. I'm really digging these too. They may not be the highest quality ever, but the recording style fits the music, and the music is good. Nice and melodic. But yeah, I noticed that buzz as well. You might wanna fix that. But thumbs up, regardless.

Re: Getting a good performance out of a shy/mumbling vocalis

Try using a whip. If he's not loud enough ... CRACK! SING LOUDER, ASSWIPE! Or you could try having everyone leave the room. Most people just don't like to sing in front of others. And as people have mentioned, it always helps to have a lot of music volume in the cans (I like saying "cans," because i...

Re: a more specific question on hiss and noise

I don't mind some hiss, but I have my limits. If it sounds like there's a damn snake in the room, I'll have to stop and do something about it. But a little bit is okay. As for noise reduction, don't do it on the overall mix. I like this function (I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0, and it came standard), but i...

Re: shocking mic on stage

I wouldn't say you're a wuss for getting shocked. That's happened to me a number of times, and that shit hurts. But yeah, it's usually because stuff isn't properly grounded.

Re: TapeOper's: what's your point of reference??

I reference everything by what I've used and what I think sounds good. But I have very broad tastes. I have one of those starpower microphones that Musician's friend sells for ten bucks, and believe it or not, it has it's uses. I've also really liked the sound of those $12 radioshack mics, the mic a...

Re: Does gear lust ever go away????

For me it fluxuates. I'm usually content until I run into something I want to record but don't have the resources. Being broke keeps the drive down some, too.

Re: Mixing with or without the band

If I can find the people to do it, I like to have friends with musical taste and equipment knowledge make mixes without me present (I mostly work solo, so there's no real Band issue). I don't use these mixes as finals, but I like to hear how someone else might hear the song. It might be interesting ...

Re: Favorite Lyricists

Oh man. Someone kick me in the face. How the hell did I forget to mention Bob Dylan? Yikes. Must be an off day. "Holes" by Mercury Rev is one of the most heartbreaking songs about the impending breakup of a band that I've ever heard. Agreed. "Bands. Those funny little plans. That never work quite ri...

And how could I forget Beck? He's got some greats. Just listen to "Debra" if you don't believe me.
