Thanks, Im still convinced these old ampexs have a very distinct sound.

I wonder how some old experiments were done with those old ampexs. Some of the stuff Ive heard is mental. Like crazy pitch changes and amazing feedback. Maybe they had a few of them.

I am a huge fan of old tape experiment music. Dockstader and the Forbidden Planet soundtrack are favorites. I am under the impression that they both used a slew of old ampex reels. Is it my imagination that tube reel-2-reel delay effects sound exclusively different when compared to tape delay boxes ...

I think jugband blues sounds sooooo incredible. I suppose it would be futile trying to recreate that sound as its abbey road. That song's production sounds so much like 'Day in the life' to me. The same sound. I just wish I could get that bass reverberant guitar sound.

In the beginning of this track there is this awesome feedback sound that is just like a lion roaring but pitched down a bit. Does anyone know how it was done? Perhaps a dumb question, but The Ampex mx-10 and mx-35 is a little mixer. If I wanted to add a touch of reverb or other effect how would I do it with these? They don't seem to have aux inputs.

Are there any techs out there that can modify tape machines? Like increasing ips' speads on r2r's or adding varispeed to tape echos?
