Creating Density in a Mix

I'm specifically referring to individual tracks, and how to make them sound more dense, full, or thick within the mix. In the past I relied on (a lot) of reverb to do this, and I'm trying to think of new ways to do it. Some ideas I've considered: -Double, triple tracking parts when recording. -Simil...

Tube Mic Recommendations for under a Grand

Just checking what's all out there...I'd like it to keep it well under a grand, actually around $500 would be nice. I've only really looked at the Rode and Studio Projects stuff...any recommendations?

Thanks for the replies. Another question, which has kind of been brought up...is a guitar amp going to work ok? I have a Beyer M160, and am thinking of upgrading my AT4040 to a tube condenser, but my only amp is a (great sounding) '77 Fender Princeton Reverb. If I use this am I going to lose some of...

Recording Electric Pianos and Organs

Just wondering what techniques people use to record electric pianos and organs that have outputs on them and don't require any mic'ing. More specifically, I'm looking for recommendations for pre's that work well on these instruments. I recently purchased a Nord Electro and am wondering what the best...

The tracks were cool...most weren't really my cup of tea musically speaking per se (though I am a big Six Organs of Admittance fan), but I thought each song having it's own texture through the recording medium itself was really cool...definitely something I am into with my own music.

Yep, still selling the pirate gear...they have a really cool display out front right now. I found the magazine at Aquarius Records. Very cool stufff. My favorite article was the music journalist and Delillo discussing Bob Dylan.

Thanks for posting this. I actually live just up the block from Eggers' store (called 826 Valencia, in San Francisco) and will have to try to find a copy of the magazine. I haven't seen it around but maybe they sell it at the store. I agree in regards to the minimal/lo-fi thing too. People often for...

Another question...is this process going to add any noise? I actually would like a little noise to bring everthing together, so to speak. I'm now considering if I should just do this myself on a 1/4" or 1/2" deck.

Thanks Brad, that helps a lot. I have my eye on a 1977. It's really weird watching what these things go for on Ebay. Some people may more for the recent reissues than for the 70's models. Sometimes a late 60's model will go for $3000, then another will pop up at $1800 and no one will even bid. I'm g...

Gibson ES-335/Kalamazoo Question

I'm curious as to what the deal is with "Kalamazoo" made Gibsons, particularly the ES-335 (original, not re-issue). Was the Gibson facotry always in Kalamazoo? Does a Kalamazoo manufactured ES-335 indicate a higher or lower quality of parts?

Listen to the very opening of the record, for example. There's totally some sort of 60-cycle buzz in the right channel which continues throughout the entire track. What it is why it's there is up for grabs, but I'm guessing that they were just concerned with other things when it got printed during ...

Tape Splicing/Music Concrete Experimentation Help

So, I want to do some abstract kind of "music concrete" tape splicing experiments to be placed way in the background of some new material I'm working on. They are going to be pretty short, quick cuts. Anyway, I'm a total novice to this so: 1) I'm not sure what all I need besides a tape splicing bloc...
