My advise would be to mix a live recording the way you would mix a live show....
Get the vocal mics sounding good then add the other elements that help the overall mx.

Solid Merch is A To Z Media's short run special setup.
They are a very good company.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I got a new amp. I ordered it in September from Cutthroat Audio in Idaho. It's their take on the Brown Deluxe with a few extra twists like internal channel jumping and selectable negative feedback and tube/SS rectifier. It's got that cool "bias tremolo" that only the brown Fenders had. I ordered it ...

Re: anyone working at 96k?
We've been doing 96k for a long time.
Sounds very good w our Burl rig.
That said, the largest percentage of the UA plugs (the modeled ones) only go to 48k.
Most of their original plugs go to 96. My OX box also only goes to 48. I use the digital outs with it at home.

Re: A 1-mic drum recording has me rethinking so many things
I've made some one mic recordings for some drummers I worked with. I also had one drummer go to a place on his own and get a one mic recording of his playing. This one guy was a very good player but he hit every drum and cymbal with the same force. The one mic recording was the eye opener I hoped fo...

Re: Silica Gel desiccant packets in the studio?
I can't find the article but Dr Z (amp maker) recommends keeping them in the back of your combo amp or in guitar speaker cabinets. Moisture can drastically alter the way paper speaker cones perform. I used them to 'dry out' some speakers that had been in a overly humid environment. They come with so...

Good to hear it.
I've done it a couple times and have experienced the positives you mention and zero regrets.

Re: Kick drum: port hole or not?
I love the non port sound. The drum acts so much more like a 'drum'. The action you get from the pedal is really different too. I've got internal mics on some of my non ported kick drums. Mounted with the simple Gibraltor L bracket using existing lug screws. Mine have internal pads but a buddy I pla...

A Neil Young story as told to Otis Gibbs
I don't know if you guys watch Otis Gibbs' YouTube clips but I sat down with him last week when I was in Nashville and he got me to tell some stories. He put one of 'em up on his channel the other day about my experience at Neil's Broken Arrow Ranch with Nils Lofgren. I'm leaving it here if you'd li...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I've had a couple mix sessions w the UnFairchild 670m II As I said above, our main 2 mix compressor has been the CraneSong STC-8. In addition to other stereo comps we have a Manley Variety-Mu and a Chandler TG-1 that we've mixed through but since getting the CraneSong in around '03 it's been our mai...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
That's the sweetness there, Roscoe! Please start a thread with your thoughts after having some time to get her going. Will do. I've only had one sort of commando session with it so far. Not much time to mess with it but it sounded really amazing on the drum bus. We've had the Crane Song STC-8 on ou...
