yet another EH 12ay7 thread
Hi folks, all the mixed reviews about this pre on this forum piqued my curiosity so I ordered one and have ben A/B-ing it a bit today. Just wanted to report that it is dead quiet using a balanced xlr > 1/4"trs into my interface (rme fireface 800). I am also happy with the sound thus far. I may just ...

oh yes
I have suffered from this too, recently. I saw a long list of recommended listening on some mastering engineer's site, and checked most of them out at the library. It was great fun - even when some of the titles were just lame (not naming names). My wife would enter the room, baffled... Traffic's 'l...

but...
My main concern was NOT coming out of a console, but out of my rme fireface outs, and if any impedance mis-matches could cause damage to it, like when you mis-match impedance with guitar amp and speaker, it can cause harm.

another reamp question
So I've read most of the reamp posts, but my question is: Can reamping (interface channel out into guitar amp) WITHOUT either a legit reamp box OR the reverse passive DI trick cause any damage to either the interface or the amp? Do you HAVE to insert something in the chain between interface out and ...

dithering
So, like, you can hear dithering? I consider myself to have decent ears, and I can't hear dithering; perhaps because I mix only rock material?

clarification - affirmative
thanks very much for your reply, Mark. I get it now. Incidentally, I just threw together a mix OTB that is much better than anything previous. I need to now be careful and objective during comparison - I don't want to like the OTB mixes better, but thus far it is shaping up that I do. On the lighter...

A/B difficulty
So now I'm confused as to how to properly do a ITB/OTB comparison. Since I have to set trim levels on the outboard mixer, even at unity the levels won't be exactly like they are in the software console. I'm thinning there's a simple way to take an ITB mix, and simply dump that exact mix into a conso...

no comprende
Mark, could you please clarify for me what this statement means, exactly? I'm not quite grasping it: "...Of course, the sooner one can be mixing through the actual signal chain, the more one will mix 'into' the sound of said chain. So earlier is better in that regard. Just like putting a compressor ...

there are a few decks on the market like Alesis' Masterlink and HHB that burn disks of the live audio that is input to them - they behave like a tape deck would, and you do not have to make your mix a file before burning it. many folks swear by this method - you are at the mercy of the units convert...

I gave it a shot
Well, I have no conclusive opinion, after comparing ITB mix and OTB mix. There is a difference like Mark said there would likely be, but I'm not sure it's exactly an upgrade. If pressed for a description, I would say that the outboard mix has a slightly more pleasant depth to it, and is a tad bright...

Seeking OTB enthusiasts opinions...
Hello - I've always let Sonar do my summing. I'm considering trying it OTB today, and am wondering if it's even worth it, based on the gear I have. I have an RME fireface with 8 outs, a Mackie 1604 console, and nothing to master to, so I'd have to round trip it all back into Sonar. With only 8 outs ...
