Thanks for the replies. I have some mix duties ahead of me pretty soon, so I'm hoping that this will clear up the issue. I appreciate the input!

Thanks for the reply, Nick. Now looking at my layout, that definitely looks like the way to go!

What about wall/corner treatment/acoustic foam, etc.?

What to do with a space like this?

I moved into my current home 4 years ago, and having taken nothing into consideration, my monitoring/mixing room became what it is: perched the very back of my shotgun house that's 12' (give or take) wide, 12' ceilings, wood floors, and butted up against my kitchen. The only thing separating the mix...

So...as for now I'm laptop bound, using a Saffire 40 (firewire). I've read about all these arcane latency workarounds, but can't seem to find anything definitive yet. This is definitely a known issue, but it seems like there are 1001 different ways of dealing with it. And I'm not the most patient pe...

Logic i/o plugin latency

So after heading online to read tons of often conflicting advice of how to route a signal OTB to hardware (in my case, a compressor), I FINALLY got a track out and back in again; however, it was coupled with the dreaded latency I've been hearing so much about. If I recall, I inserted the i/o plugin ...

Worst of TOMB, anyone?

I was going through a long-dormant hard drive and found recordings I did from 13+ years ago and just had to give a listen. Initially, I was horrified, but then I started picking out cues and techniques, that, for better or worse, I still employ today! So, would anyone like to bare it all and revisit...

Kickass.

But what was the "it" that said that your early, nascent recording was indicative of badassery?

Paying too much attention to the man behind the curtain...

I've been playing music since I was 8 and first went into a studio with my big dumb rock band when I was 15. Completely transfixed by the process, I knew that recording was something I wanted to be a part of. Now, as a 13-year recording hobbyist who has managed to eke out a modicum of work from it (...

I appreciate everybody's feedback. I've decided to hold of on any definitive mix decisions until I leave the headphone realm and get my monitors back in action.

I do have a handful of mixes that I've done recently that I'll soon post on the Listen to My Stuff forum.

Thanks all the replies everybody! I just went through the project and found some washy trouble spots I must've overlooked before (front of kit ribbon mic had a ton of cymbals, drum buss compression got tweaked to reduce a bit of the wash), and I increased the guitar volume by 2db. Maybe it's the pla...

I also posted over at GSlutz, and Geoff Tanner was kind enough to chime in and add some great insight to this conversation.

Thanks for the feedback!

I guess I should've also mentioned that my monitors are MIA, so I've been doing all the mixing in the headphones. Which also definitely skews my sense of balance!

I'm looking to remedy this ASAP (trying to decide between the Equator D5s or the Yamaha HS50Ms).

Thanks! Maybe it's just time to quit obsessing on this cymbal-quirk and move on to the big picture.

There's still a lot of work left to be done here (including re-tracking of almost everything but drums), but you might get an idea of the cymbal wash. Especially after the 2nd chorus on out!

I have 5 tracks for drums: OH R & L (a la Glyn Johns/recorderman), snare, kick, ribbon 5 feet in front of kit, ribbon in stairwell about 12' high/10' from kit. I'm sending these signals all into a buss for parallel compression as well. I was just listening to a quick mix of one of the songs in quest...
