Re: burning airlines/j robbins snare sound?
well, as usual, i'm getting way off topic here, but a variation on what auxillary mentioned is lay one stick across the rim and head, and rub the other stick against that one, hard. move the stick around on the head and the tone changes. a cool little effecty kind of thing....

Re: burning airlines/j robbins snare sound?
yep, that's totally right.
another thing i like about hitting rimshots is you can play fairly quietly and still get a nice solid thwack outta the snare.
the difference in tone between just hitting the snare in the center and rimshots is pretty dramatic. try it out, see what you like....

Re: Big drum sound?
i'd clap my hands in the room first and see if there's any flutter echo. if there is, put up blankets one at a time till it goes away. if the room's 18 feet long you should be able to get some size outta those drums. i'd probably do standard kick/snare/oh, one room mic around 6 feet in front and ano...

Re: Bizarre techniques revisited: non-rock instruments
one night my ancient air conditioner started vibrating wildly, doing this amazing drum n bass rhythm. like any good tapeopper, i got out of bed, put a 57 on it and recorded 10 minutes of it to dat.
listened to it the next morning.
sounded just like an air conditioner.
oh well.

Re: Hi, I'm a dummy. Compressor help, if you got a sec...
yeah i've been doing that too, with both drums and vocals. normally with my drums i like them totally uncompressed, but certain times i like completely squashed for effect. sometimes though, with a dense mix with lots of guitars i need to lay in some compressed kick/snare and/or room mics to keep th...

Re: Bizarre techniques revisited: non-rock instruments
good topic. artist wanted to try the 'finger on the lip of a wine glass' thing. poured some water in glass, rubbed edge, i sat there holding up a tuner, we kept emptying water out a bit at a time until it was a nice solid 'G'. recorded a minute or so, sounded cool. listening back, i thought it'd be ...

Insulting my intelligence? No way! Thanks a lot...I think I'm getting it. excellent. i use one compressor on drums all the time. lately it's been all plugs. either the waves c1 or the digitalfishphones blockfish. try it out, see how it sounds. as far as the combined sounds affecting the comp, often...

Re: Hi, I'm a dummy. Compressor help, if you got a sec...
auxes and inserts are two different things. inserts are usually on individual channels, auxes are global. so, for example, your snare track is coming up on channel 2 on the board, you want to compress it, you'd patch yr compressor into the insert on channel 2 and it would only be affecting the snare...

Holy crap, Scott. Consider the bar lowered. excellent. That was some very serious 80's guitar wank. Wow. You just wait. I think I can make your song sound like the Carpenters.... bring it!!! the awful-er the better. i don't know if i have anything awful-er than that. but for you guys...i'll try.
