I'd volunteer my wife, but we're expecting a baby in April, so I don't think she'll be up for that (she's planning to come to the con with me, though!) Congratulations John! Thanks! It's very exciting, and slightly terrifying! Maybe we should take Albini's lead and organize a big poker tourney for ...

I track at 24 bit/ 44.1khz, mostly just because it sounds good to my ears, and the technical problems with higher sample rates (my computer slows to a crawl already, I can't imagine doubling the load.) Plus, I actually believe that Nyquist was right, and while it can be shown that 44.1 causes some h...

Very cool! One other mixing tip, if you're not intimately familiar with the tracks, (and even if you are). I like to get a basic mix up, then just listen to the track about 5 times (if I have the time) before making any moves. I close my eyes and really pay attention to both what I'm hearing that's ...

I think it really depends on the project, the time constraints, etc. IN this situation, I would agree that you should just leave the levels up after the first mix, and start on the second one. If it's all sort of in the same vein, your drum and bass setting will probably be pretty consistent. I woul...

I don't get to Tucson often enough to suggest many destinations, but a luncheon seems reasonable. Are there many tour-type things in the area? Maybe a trip to downtown Tucson (the area near the Congress Hotel) for shopping/lunch? Might be a little hot for that... I know there's a cool missile silo t...

At a lot of conferences (or it was this way when I was a kid, anyway), there would be activities for the significant others. Nothing too earth-shattering, but stuff like tours, maybe a luncheon, etc. Nothing that the con has to pay for, necessarily, just an open invitiation for significant others to...

Well, I just spent about 10 hours yesterday getting what I thought was a great mix of this metal song recorded by some friends in Pro Tools HD. I put it on a test listen CD with a song that I recorded and mixed to two tracks in real time on an HD 24 with a Yamaha 01V96 as a demo. Well, the demo tra...

It's funny, I was just thinking about this today. I think part of what makes a demo sound better to most people's ears is that the quality is like a mask. Like looking at the world through sunglasses, or shooting a photo through a lens with vaseline. It's blurry, funky, and just covers up a lot of t...

For me it comes in waves. I'll have no cancellations for months on end, then suddenly 5 bands will all need to reschedule/cancel. I haven't gone to a deposit policy yet, but I might eventually. It doesn't solve anything really. If the band cancels more than a few days in advance, you end up refundin...

I know this thread has been dead a couple of weeks... I think this is such an important question. It's what separates the men from the boys, so to speak. It's relatively easy to get a fantastic sounding recording. You read the books, buy/rent the best gear, and if nothing awful happens, you get a fa...

Anybody tried starting a label? There are a few bedroom labels here, they all have their own studios, naturally. I've been thinking that what I need is a way to help the bands I record get heard, signed, tour, whatever. I really have no interest in doing that (I've done every phase of the business, ...

I'm a bit of a newbie here too! Generally, you'll just want to tie all of the grounds together someplace, connected to the chassis (if it's a metal box.) On the switch question, there's no directionality to a switch, so 2 ins and 1 out is the same as 1 in and 2 outs. Use a continuity tester and play...

I'd have to say that, while the tones are definitely more 'modern' and clean, you're losing a lot of your playing. The little ghost notes at the end, and the final roll, I noticed sound especially slaughtered. I think the basic tones of your set aren't that terrible, assuming you haven't applied any...
