soundhack spectral shapers giveaway
Hi all, I gave Craig a couple of my software bundles to give away, but somehow they got misplaced and didn't make it to the giveaway cart. So I'm going to ask a couple questions. The first person to answer either of the following questions will win a download copy of my bundle (that's two winners, o...

In the analog cables that go from your convertors to the console, are the sheilds lifted on the inputs? This will break the signal ground connection from computer to console. At the same time, try beefing up the ground connection from the computer & analog gear to the studio ground point. I'm strugg...

Just had a chance to record with one of these $500 U87 clones. I put it up against a Neumann TLM170 and TLM103, recording Mark Dresser playing a travel acoustic bass (it is his microphone). All mics were about 12" from the bridge and set on cardioid. Pretty clear and even sound, the top end seemed a...

i thought the "circuit bending" workshop was pretty awesome... nic collins did a great stand-up routine with not much more than a contact microphone, 4" speaker and a 9 volt battery. david wright and samara krugman had a cool collection of hacked childrens toys. david's suggestion of what to do with...

any internships in san diego, oc or la?
Hey all - I teach the recording track in the UCSD School of Music, and would love to hear from any studios that are looking for interns this summer. I have a group of great students who are all eager to hone their skills with some real experience. Send me a message back though this board. Best, Tom ...

peak handles audiounit and vst plugins well enough - though i tend to avoid the program these days - imho, its just not flexible enough (i do my final mastering tweaks in either protools or logic - much easier to set up a complex processing chain). btw - where are you in san diego? i'm in bird rock,...

no, not sample rate independent - these are the initial measurements i made monday just so i could figure out why our cue feeds were screwing up our musicians. the tests were all done at 96k (which is our typical rate), except for the yamaha (in another studio), which i did at 44.1k. i'll do some mo...

This morning I installed PT7, and remeasured. I am now getting 2-3 samples latency in ProTools. This is playing out of our 192, patching through a zSys digital patchbay and recording back into our 192. I recorded on all 32 channels of our 2 192s, and all were in sync. So a nice improvement with the ...

a few latency measurements
we spent some time measuring the latency of various digital devices in the studio, just to see what was contributing to our overall delay. we need to verify these readings, but the initial results are interesting: protools hd (6.7) - in and out - 12 samples apogee da16x & ad16x - combined - 40 sampl...
