Re: How many other studios have you been in?

Since I last posted here, I've thought of another 9. 5 of which are mastering studios in Los Angeles.

Re: questions from a 'newbie' to mastering (well, kinda newb

You guys who have only these DAW domains don't know what clear open high end really sounds like. I'm talking harmonically tall. Mastering without the equipment that yields that open-ness provides diminishing returns. The home studio is a money saver, but I'd never put money before art- EVER. Every d...

Call Audio Rents in Los Angeles and ask for John Case. He's a wiz with those. Area code is 323, just call information for the number.

Re: Anybody have Blue Balls?

Being a tremendous fan of the Neumann CMV563 with M7 capsule, I am intrigued to try their Kiwi model. I did try the Baby Bottle and was very disappointed in it's cheap, chirpy microphonic-ness. Being their budget mic, I'm sure it didn't get all the design care. I stick to a few thousand $$$ to get a...

Re: Any "affordable" monitors with good low end?

Here's a tip for you guys mixing on near fields- forget about dealing accurately with anything below 60hz. Near fields just won't touch those frequencies. Rear porting and proper distance from a back wall can help, but you'll never really get a proper picture without a set of main monitors sporting ...

Prime-rate,

What's your digital clock source? Is everything being clocked individually or are you just using plugins?

Re: Soundcraft Spirit M12, your thoughts please?

You'll do well with a Soundcraft. Probably a used board, so get some deoxit, get under the deck, clean the faders and get tracking!

Re: Analog semi-pro going to PC DAW- suggestions?

I still remember the project I tracked on an Otari DTR100 digital 32-track back in 1991- the one I could only work on that at the studio we recorded it at- because no other studios had one of those machines anywhere else. 24-track analog was the standard at all studios. Your consideration now should...

First things first. Send them to Capitol Mastering at Capitol studios if budget is the reason they don't want someone else to do it. Tell Beatrice 323-871-5003 you'd like their after hours rate. Work with Mark Chalecki and attend the mastering session. You'll learn loads and you'll learn you'll neve...

Re: $200 Audio-Technica tube mic?

By the way, the AT3035 is a great little mic for $199. Two of those as room mics for a drumkit would be an affordable option for some. I can't imagine the tube unit would make that much of a difference having heard the Groove Tube GT66 at $499.

Re: Mic Preamp Question

The Focusrite Octopre would be a solid contender at $799. You can get an expansion board for it to that allows for a digital lightpipe out. Pretty handy. I haven't heard of the SM, but in that price range, I'll bet it's noisy.

Re: protools plugin question

Yes it is possible to do that. (by the way, with your software there should be a .pdf Adobe file of the manual. I'd suggest locating that on your hard disc for future reference.) If you're familiar with basic console operations, it's very easy to do setting it up in the Pro Tools mix window. I'll as...

Re: before9to5 not afterwards

It's all circular obsession. Let's face it guys, we're obsessive. I've worked a 12 hour day with a band and not gotten a single guitar sound I could stand- essentially a wasted day for what we paid- we recorded nothing, but I did learn about some combinations of gear I hadn't put together before. I ...

Re: timing

I've had luck close miking a guitar cabinet and then several feet away placing a room mic that doesn't face the cabinet. In the control room, before committing to whatever domain you're recording in, you put a digital delay after the preamp of the room mic. You print the close mike on one track and ...
