DIY? Just use a switch to short pins 2 and 3. If you use one of those Carling-style stompbox switches, you can use one of the extra poles of the switch to light an LED to indicate when it's live. I have a need for something like that myself...I've been using an inline barrel switch, but the switch ...

Mic Mute Pedal

I need a mic mute switch in pedal form (a switch on the mic won't work in this situation).

The cheapest I've seen is the Pro Co Sign Off at $79.

Anyone know of any cheaper ones?

I totally agree about the Beyer M380 and the Octava MC-012. Those would be the first two on my list. Chris Garges Charlotte, NC Chris, when you use the MC-012's on toms, how do you overcome the proximity effect? Whenever I try MC-012's on toms they're to boomy at close range, and when I pull them b...

Like dicko pointed out, probably every stage that can impart some pleasant harmonic distortions are being utilized, i.e. source, pres, compressors, tape machine, maybe plug-ins. Also sounds like they're using plenty of HPF-ing to retain the clarity.

Keep in mind 641 is pretty low quality tape, "voice quality" is how Ampex described it. Developed in the mid 60's, it has dramatically less dynamic range and HF retentivity compared to modern tape. Best bet for your TEAC 1230 would be new RMGI LPR 35. I've heard a lot of differing opinions on this....

what kind of tape is it? some older tapes (like Scotch 175) squeal but don't go sticky. baking will actually make this tape worse, since it's dried out (I think it's a loss of lubricant issue). These tapes are likely on 7" reels; NEVER BAKE PLASTIC REELS! It's Sony ULH back-coated tape, apparently ...

Wow, that's actually really good news, desipite the stickiness to clean up.

It makes sense as the start of the reel was unaffected, and the further in the reel I got, the worse it got.

Thanks for the input.

Squeeling Tape Deck

Just picked up a TEAC 1230, and surprise, surprise, there's some issues... At first it was doing OK, and recorded this (using Sony ULH back-coated tape probably not ideal for this deck): http://soundcloud.com/palinilap/tape-deck-test And then a squeeling started to occur, and the tape started windin...

Manuals are available from Teac. Scotch 150 was introduced in 1954, the time of the Ampex 350 (long before the Teac 1230). The 1230 was produced in the early 70's, the time of 3M (Scotch) 206 / 207 and Ampex 406 / 407. The bias required for these tapes is not significantly different from modern sto...

Changing Record EQ Caps

I'm picking up a TEAC 1230 this weekend, and would like to set it up to accommodate new tape formats, instead of resorting to Scotch 150 or the like. I've heard that I need to not only adjust the BIAS, but also change out the record EQ caps, as the originals create a huge 7.5kHz bump. The problem is...

I'll be using it for multitracking/overdubs: mic > mixer > sending 2 identical signals > DAW (This is the track I'll monitor) >Tape deck record head > playback head > DAW After the fact I'll nudge the tape track back. I'll be getting the deck biased by a friend to better accommodate current tape.

Aha....So if the machine is in alignment, and the crosstalk isn't terrible, I could flip the tape over and use the other two tracks?

Track Count of TEAC 1230

I'm going to look at one of these this weekend. It's apparently a 2 channel 4-track machine, but looking at a photo (L/R RCA line ins are on the back), I can't envision how I would use it as a 4-track. Seems like a 2-track machine to me. Any ideas? http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g224/palinilap/Te...

1/4" Attenuator for Guitar Effects Chain

I have some finicky pedals. A fuzz that needs a ton of input gain to break up nicely (I use a RAT to drive the fuzz), and a delay that sounds crappy if you hit it too hard. I'd like to attenuate after the fuzz and before the delay (I like having the delay last for proper trailing when switching fuzz...
