I've had this idea that the world's best band would be accordion, highland bagpipes, steel drums and banjo. Such maligned instruments.
There are no bad instruments, just naughty musicians.

Best Bass Amp Ever!! I recorded a guy years ago who had one of them, and then it became a mission to find one for myself. I found mine a few years back for $300, but I think it's easily worth 5 bills. As a recording amp, I like it better than the b-15 as well. Mine has a replaced speaker too, some r...

I think you're doing well. Jacob's song sounds fine. I think My path sounds good, too, but I can hear some of the phasey stuff you're talking about, especially in the little odd lick that he plays between verses. It doesn't sound WRONG to me, though. I, personally, don't bother with stereo guitar mi...

I've got a grommes/precision mono mixer, approx 1960 era. ( I can't remember the model # right now... something like gm5 ....) It's got a bunch of 12ax7's, 4 channels mic pre, one line pre, one phono level, and a bass and a treble knob. I don't use it as a mixer, just one channel at a time. It sound...

Yes, all of the above, but I've found that "listening to some stuff" is one of the most useful preproduction activities of all. Everyone should bring their favorite records. I call it "the listening party". This can occupy many hours, and it's always a lesson in sonics, arrangement, and emotional pr...

TRY IT
I think it would look cool as shit. Why don't you try it and tell us what happens? It would be nearly free, aside from the labor. Randomness would help, somehow.....

Flush Mounted Monitors
Hi Folks I'm building a studio, and I am going to flush mount some speakers. I have a pair of 15 year old krk cube shaped prototype speakers for near fields. Does anyone have any fave's for some bigger speakers? I don't really care if they're self powered or not, I just want a pair of cruel workhors...

I did this exact thing about a year ago- a blues band at a dead sounding neighborhood bar. I put up a single shure vp88 stereo mic running through a drawmer 1960 (stereo) compressor. I thought it sounded great, but since my entire vocal sound was coming out of the PA, it showed the PA system's weakn...

TOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!
Well, I never recorded bamboo bass, but the one session in which I did bowed saw, the band had a washtub bass. I had the saw player and the washtub bass player sitting/ standing right next to each other, and I put a fig-8 ribbon between them. It sounded FABULOUS! Explain this bamboo bass, I'm fascin...

East Ash was AMAZING!! "Ellie" is one of the best albums no one ever heard. I Love "green chevy" and "push" especially. They were better than anyone else. yes, I remember everything about that record. "green chevy" is supposed to be the first song on the record, but the label thought "north pole but...

If you're looking to specifically mitigate some high mid stuff, I think a bit of absorbtion is what you neeed in your cutting room. Diffusors come in a few flavors, such as "quadratic residue" (differing well depths with a solid backing), or the kind with varying widths of planks of wood mounted on ...
