All the more reason to leave vintage gear at home/in the studio? Just seems wide open for something catastrophic to happen on the road, not the least of which being stolen gear... I make a rule for myself that if it can't be replaced then I don't take it on the road. That's one philosophy. But ther...

After plenty of time to dry out, Give the pot and entire board (including inductor) a bath in Caig DeOxit or similar electronics contact cleaner. After the DeOxit treatment, MAKE SURE you douse the pot (especially if it's a valuable/vintage ICAR pot) with a liberal amount of Caig F5 faderlube. This ...

As long as Clarence Kane is alive (or his apprentice, perhaps), I wouldn't worry so much about keeping RCA ribbons in working order. He can repair a lot of mechanical parts (straightening/resilking grilles, etc), even if they might not be available. The 77DX is a great microphone that is worth havin...

each human body offers about 5 sabins of absorption. How many seats does the school auditorium have, and what percentage of those seats do you expect to be full? Since you cannot treat the space at all, each body in those seats will help you. Also to that end, bear in mind that spending much time on...

That is cool. I wish they would have shown how the gold sputtering works. Swing by Klaus Heyne's Mic Forum over on prosoundweb.com All that has been discussed and gone over a bunch of times. They get pretty in-depth over there. Sputtering is a crazy process. Out of all aspects of mic production, th...

This is typical: http://www.royerlabs.com/R-121.html Click on 'technical data' and this is a modern ribbon mic. I'm not sure what we're proving here. To the extent that frequency plots could be meaningful in gauging the subjective sound character of a microphone (dubious, at best, in my experience)...

ribbons have a darker tone overally and restricted frequency response. Not inherently true, but I know where you're coming from. This often IS the case in practice, but it need not be. Ribbons can be very extended top and bottom. This requires proper tuning of the ribbon, avoidance of excessive bla...

If the player isn't capable of playing with a little more finesse, you have to compromise. First of all--and this sounds obvious, but it's really true--if you have the option to try a few instruments, find the loudest accordion you can. Some are way louder than others. I had an old E. Bertini 120 ba...
