Definitely the Calrec Soundfield Ambisonic mic. About $9g's when it was first introduced iirc. An amazing job by Peter Moore and the band on documenting a great performance. Excellent and extensive notes on the session can be read at http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/albums/trinitysession/index2.html Bes...

A "24 bit CD" format has existed already for 9 years. It's called "DVD-Audio" in case you hadn't heard of it. You can author them and make one offs with just a regular old DVD-R burner and an inexpensive software app. Cirlinca just released a nice update to their "DVD Audio Solo" app they are now ca...

You can't use the same DA to feed the chain as you send to your monitoring controller... Well, actually you could with a y-cable or other passive splitter feeding both the controller and the chain - if you wanted to and if the impedance between the devices being connected matched well. I however mu...

Small update. I talked to Gabe today - he seemed in decent spirits despite the huge bummer - he's not the type to let a little adversity to keep him from moving forward. Apparently the Trident console is working fine - so at least some good news there.

hey MT, how about Bob Weston's place? http://www.chicagomasteringservice.com/ I'm pretty sure that Bob and Jason don't have a tape deck equipped with preview/program paths so they would have to do the side as fixed pitch/depth (which would greatly limit the length and level that could be cut). Best...

That absolutely sucks. I was wondering why I hadn't heard back from them about when they wanted to pick up their latest reference disc. Definitely need to give Gabe & Neal a call.

The places I can think of that can definitely do all analog vinyl mastering are: http://www.saltmastering.com http://www.sterlingsound.com http://www.abbeyroad.com http://www.masterdisk.com I believe Acoustech at RTI in California, and The Exchange at London can also do it. I'm sure there's a few ot...

Got to mention once again that Pharcyde's "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" remains one of my favorite hip-hop records ever. Nice job on that one.

No - ALAC is a lossless codec very similar to FLAC. The main difference is that Apple charges a license fee for non-Apple developers to use it and to date afaik have not allowed non-Apple hardware to support it. Rockbox will play ALAC files. I use a Rockboxed Sandisk Sansa e200 with my ALAC files e...

I have an EXO system hooked up to my studio's office computer. I think it's sounds really nice as a step up from typical computer speakers for listening to stuff coming off of the internet - but there's no way in heck I'd ever want to make any mix decisions with it - way too inaccurate and way too l...

The word "lossless" is not anybody's trademark. I predict that Apple will monetize the "lossless" concept by conceiving their own proprietary "lossless" codec. Then they will offer upgrades to people who already own lossy versions of stuff bought from itunes. Sorry to those who are sick of me posti...
