Re: New to recording
Yoiks! If you are starting from square one, nearly any book will help. There is one published by Yamaha that I see all over the place. I've never run across a book that would lead you in the completely wrong direction (except for a non-bound home recording guide that I can't remember the name of. It...

Re: I just bought Tracktion
I'm going DAW over the next year after some years of tape and hard disk "tape machine" recording. I have a little experience with one program, but won't be getting that. Tracktion has caught my eye, but I'm wondering about using third party plug-ins with it. Does that work out well? at all? In any e...

Re: Another confirmation that corporate rock still sucks.
It seems to me that the Avril Whats-her-name and Nickleback examples are a little different. I've been bombarded with all those songs on lunch break and elsewhere, so I'm at least familiar with them. One of the Avril songs sounds like it is at a different speed, the rhythm "hits" aren't the same, th...

Re: Must-to-own books for engineers
The New Stereo Soundbook Although it is more from a pristine classical/jazz documentation point of view, this book is a must have. All sorts of information about how to make it seem like the listener is there when it is happening: psychoacoustics, head-realted transfer functions, stereo microphone ...

Re: Gear Rant #584,598,932
The first two condensers I got were the C1000S and the Rode NT1. I still own the C1000S. I gave the Rode away after about 2 months (I couldn't live with myself selling it). Yea, the C1000S sort of sucks, but so does a 57 or a 58. The high end is brittle, but nothing like the Rode. I don't hate it, b...

Re: SOundcraft 200B 16-Channel Board
My line input on channel 3 just died on me. Any ideas? I have never had any problems with mine that a good cleaning won't fix. Otherwise, pop the channel out and see if something has come loose, etc.. You know general trouble shooting stuff. To the original poster, if that sucker is under $40...

Re: mobile recording / monitoring
Chris, I've got to second Dave's opinion. That is the way I've always had to do it: record then listen. Although it is a pain to drag monitors all over the place as well as all your other gear, it pays off in the end. If you must do the headphone route, just get the best ones you can afford: Sennhei...

Re: First Black Metal session.
I just checked the band's site. Although I don't get into the new style of deathmetal so much (Venom is more my speed), I am always a sucker for literary references as a basis for bands/albums. I just finished "The Screwtape Letters" for the 20th time last month, and I've got to say it gets creepier...

I found some sounds a couple of days ago, but they melted in my pocket. Everyone on the buss thought I had peed myself. How embarrassing.

Re: Joe Satriani
I used to like him when I was much younger, sort of. His playing sounded so freaking amazing, I thought I just had to like the music. I got over that and will now admit that I think the music stinks. Just an opinion. My breakthrough moment was seeing him and Stevie Ray Vaughan on MTV's unplugged som...

Re: Jobs that let you tour
The one that worked for me, and is one of the sweetest gigs there are, is to go to college. Do enough searching and you will find grants and scholarships so you don't have to rely so much on student loans. Get some punk ass job bartending or whatever. Also, if you are in college parents are more lik...

Yar, must I always be wrong? Apparently so.Uh, I think the Marshall Power Brake (some call it the Air Brake; I think it's the same?) is their product like the original Power Soak. The Guv'ner is a distortion pedal?

Re: a little off topic, but wondering if anyone has done thi
No, this will not do what you want it to do. I doubt the Gibson has much power, so you probably won't blow up the 2nd power amp, but it will be nothing but an incredibly distorted sound and uncontrolable feed-back. I have tried all sorts of freaky things, and this is one of my most favorite/most use...
