Re: In-ear Monitors (IEMs)

I think a lot of professionals just use their live IEMs in the studio also, like why wouldn't you use very high quality custom-fitted devices? I have a pair of the base model Sensaphonics IEMs, custom molded of course. I got them because I'm a live sound guy and once in a while get an IEM monitor mi...

I've had kits going back to the IDE days. Remember you left something o...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

big SSDs are getting cheaper, but... some are best suited for backup duty or for storing samples. Many of the cheap ones are 'QLC" (quad-level-cell) NAND and are slower on writing data, so not good as a primary drive for audio. Read performance will be very good (great for fast access to a sample l...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

A 1 terabyte SSD for my home desktop, and a fresh Linux install (this time Linux Mint). Wow I had not realized how cheap big SSDs had gotten! I needed an OS refresh anyway, plus I'm home sick for a few days so I've got plenty of free time. Also there's some memory coming, but... ... here's the thing...

Re: Fateful recording

I'll add to my above to say that when I started doing live sound, it was easier to stay away (and hear correctly) if I was sober. More recently I had to stop drinking altogether because of a medication I'm taking, been doing that since around Christmas. I'm due to go off that medication fairly soon ...

Re: Electro-Voice 641- got one? What do you think of it?

I've got one! I guess it's really a lot like the 635A, just in a different sort of package. Haven't done whole lot with mine, it's just sort of always been with me since I found it at a university surplus place back when I was a teen. I think it would be good on guitar amp, which is where I'm curren...

Re: What are you listening to today?

Total fave, a big influence! I really like both guitarists and their solo stuff. It was a fun listen. Followed up today with another inexplicably missing album, that Big Star one. Also enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm not sure how to place these albums, they do have the quality of being a little outside...

Re: Fateful recording

I get high from life, and from just being an American.

...but seriously, being creative is kind of its own odd drug for me. Best not mixed with others, but also something I don't want to be on *all* the time.

An album that missed me back in the day... Television's "Marquee Moon".

The world needs more mic preamps about as much as it needs more coffee mugs.
But when I really need that warmth, I have to use the British mug.
Earl Grey, then?

Hmmm... make a copy of the track, slide it a tiny bit back in time, and use that as the sidechain to a compressor?

Re: Avid sold

it might. Some private equity firms have been known to "optimize" the company - usually meaning they make huge cuts in order to squeeze every bit of profit out that they can before they sell it off again. If that happens, then I wouldn't look for much new from avid in the way of releases, patches, ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Given that they're having a crazy "we finally have chip suppliers again" sale at Metric Halo, I grabbed an LIO-8 mkIV to round out my I/O system. The preamps on the ULN-8's are great, but I didn't need a bank of more preamps to handle my external mic pre's — not pictured I have a UA 4-710 The world...

When you buy the bulk chord, how are you attaching the ends to make the loop?
Tie a knot. The thin stuff knots fairly well.
