Re: softening digital

I'd recommend starting with some mics that have a more laid back response. Ribbons, as mentioned. Neumann KM84s are not quite cheap, but they sure as hell don't sound harsh.

My room response is a much bigger concern for me than the low end response of my 6As. I also am not a low end freak, I do a lot of acoustic music, but I'm really happy with them. Take the money you save with the 6As and get a sub. I've read that the 12s theoretically and in practice do not translate...

We use CD Baby for our digital distro. We send them about 5 copies of the album and have only had to restock a couple releases.

It's worth it for us for the time being, especially considering we get a barcode with the deal.

I have done this once before with pretty good results. I tend to not like the sound of vocals through my Schoeps, and the only other pencil mic I have is the KM84. So some day I'll have more of the 84s to work with and will definitely try this out some more.

Single mic on live voice+instrment

I've experimented a little bit with this in the past, but never felt confident enough to use it with more modern (modern is relative for me, I'm certainly not shooting for a top 20 sound) sounding recordings I do. I spent the last couple days recording with a band I did their previous (and their fir...

Initial testing has gone great with them. I don't doubt that they'll hold up quite well once I really get to using them.

I have an external power supply using the JLM Powerstation.

I gotta start buying expensive transformers. I now have a box of good components, caps, resistors, common values, different materials, need tranny's now. Current projects: 3 kids, Building studio out of my big 2 car + LARGE shop, Modding all my gear, (mostly done) Work, (I mix during the day, audio...

That's true that unless you're diy-ing en masse, your gear savings are pretty negligible. And once you factor in the cost of tools and time you may be losing money. But I do think going diy is a great learning experience, and will get you basic electronic knowledge that's going to make you a better...

8 channel 312/M1 type build!

It's finally done! (I started this design almost a year ago!) 8 channels of 990 based preamps on my newly designed hybrid 312 PCBs. 4 channels straight up 312 style and 4 M1 style (2 with JE JT16A and two with Lundahl LL1538) with DC input bias and output DC servo. I'm excited to do some tracking wi...

For sale is the Hybrid 312 PCB. It's based around the API 312 circuit and can also be built up as an M1 circuit, or combinations of the two. They are designed to mount in the same style as the 7th Circle units but can be built up for under 2/3 the cost. I have full BOMs for three different builds an...

Actually, they are essentially balanced... do some homework and think about the circuit for a bit. Hot leg, cold leg & no need for a ground wire because the RF interference is very low relative energy AND it is likely canceled out on the other end because it would be EQUAL energy across BOTH legs. ...

I just noticed that I'm an "ass engineer". Hm... I sure don't feel like one. I guess I'll have to spend more time on the message board to increase my imaginary web-based social status.

Great spring verb. I'm working at a place right now that has probably 7 or 8 or 9 different types of spring verb and the BX20 stands out in a big way from the rest of them. It's very smooth. It's a verb I could actually see myself using (spring verbs are generally too springy for me, I like more hi-...
