I just bought a pair of the Meeks. I've always liked having different mics to choose from. I'm not counting on these being my goto mics but I'm sure they'll come in handy. I have a pair of SM 81's and a pair of 451's. I'm sure the Meeks will be good when I need something kinda trashy sounding.

For a $1,500 dollar budget you could also consider the Drawmer 1960 tube pre. It gets good reviews. Or if you're not married to the idea of a tube pre you could consider a Vintech unit.

I used to apply compression to individual drums too but I'm starting to find submixing the drums and putting a compressor across it works better for me. I'd say just start with some mild settings and start turning the knobs and see what pops out. What kind of compressor do you use?

I guess as always these things are according to taste. I use the Sennheiser 602 mic which sounds great. I've used Audix mics in the past and they're pretty good too but I've found the 602 a little better in capturing that woof you're looking for. I've done the outside mic before as well as the tunne...

I used my Tascam PortaStudio until it fell apart. I loved that thing. I might start looking around for a decent 4trak reel to reel after reading this thread. Good stuff guys....

Go rent the movie Gig and see if you can see what this guy plays through...Great movie by the way for any musician to watch. There's a few recording scenes in there too but I can't remember what was being used.

Stereo Drum Traks from Keyboard

Hi guys, A friend of mine is bringing me some stereo drum traks from his keyboard to do some songs with. My question is how do I get these things to sound a little more big in the mix? Aside from using some compression and eq I'm kind of at a loss. The music type is industrial rock. I don't really k...

I use my VC6Q for bass guitar when I'm doing punk or alternative stuff. It makes a pretty good vox pre if I need something kinda trashy sounding. I've always had my eye on the big stereo mic pre's and the stereo compressors that JM makes. Lots of color for sure.

My beloved TSR-8

I've had my TSR-8 for about 10 years now and it's time for a complete servicing and possibly new heads. I called Tascam and got a quote of at least 700 bucks plus shipping based on what I told them. Does anyone know of anyplace with a proven track record that might come in a little lower than this? ...

Well I'm gonna toss out another mic as a suggestion here. I recently bought a BLUE Blueberry for under a grand and it's a great mic so far. I've used it on accoustic guitar and male vocals and I'm pretty satisfied with it so far. But as has been said here, always be thinking about adding to the coll...

Reslo Ribbon Mics

Hey everybody! I purchased two Reslo ribbon mics, older ones from the 60's. Now I know these aren't the best ribbon mics in the world but I got them for a pretty low price and it was a good way for me to add some new mics to my mic box. So the question here is does anyone have any experience with th...
