Re: Plug-in suggestions for the minimalist studio

anyone selling their UAD card, satellite, etc, should be telling you what plugs it is coming with. Unsure if they changed it - it has been a while since I bought or sold anything of theirs, but if you have pieces of hardware, you can have them in the same system or separate systems. If they are sepa...

Re: Plug-in suggestions for the minimalist studio

to the OP: +1 for plugin alliance subscription, though I would really miss my UAD comps - esp 33609. over the years, i've acquired an awful lot of UAD plugs buying second hand cards. plenty of deals out there if you're patient, especially as studios need to rely less and less on unloading CPU proces...

FS: Oktavamod MKL2500

Up for sale I have some gear that isn't getting much love lately: Sytek 4 channel mic pre with stock ICs ( no Burr Brown). purchased new in 2005 or so. I have had no issues with it whatsoever. it's a damn workhorse, but i have so many mic pres these days that I don't find myself using it much. great...

pres on Focusrite interfaces?

curious about the quality of these - especially scarlett vs claret - though I assume either would probably be perfectly serviceable for what I need it to do: would be for some remote recording work for podcasting via USB. just need 3 inputs - one for the mc and a pair for the audience. been using a ...

how often are you using non cardioid patterns?

not talking about mics that are non-switchable. aside from using omni for room mics and the occasional fig 8 when micing up a singer/songwriter for rejection of vocals or acoustic guitar in live tracking situations, I almost never use non-cardioid patterns. i recognize in live tracking situations, t...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

i keep thinking about getting a dedicated DI, as i sometimes have need for one. I have a ton of mic pres with a DI input jacks and I usually just use those, though I use a fairly crazy way to get to it if player is in my live room: Radial Bigshot ABY with one input heading to the amp, the other into...

def curious about the little red monster, though was a bit put off by the company owner(?) going a bit off the rails at some detractors on a certain messageboard with (still) an unfortunate name.

Re: limiting busses in rock music - digital

in really dense mixes, i often stick a brick wall limiter on the bass. otherwise, it's tons of compression, often in parallel.

if i ever feel like anything is poking out too much, it often just needs work earlier in the chain - most common issue is inconsistent drummers with the kick.

Re: Tape Plugins

I have the UAD Studer and Ampex. I used the Ampex on my master bus for a long while and stuck the studer on individual drum tracks or bass tracks frequently. Now, I honestly just use the Studer on 2 bus sometimes - 30ips gives you a nice low end bump. The Ampex can be fun on individual things if you...

Re: 47 FET style mics

I do have an SM7B. I use it frequently for screamers and sometimes for guitar cabs. Tried on kick here and there but was always kinda meh on it in that regard. I also have X1Ds (got 3 when they were blowing them out) and while I like them on bottom Tom mics - they complement my MK012 or ATM450 on th...

47 FET style mics

admittedly, i've never used one, but I imagine my U195 with the "fat" switch engaged might be somewhat in the ballpark. am I wrong? I am curious what other mics might get me this kind of vibe and possibly do a better job for not a whole lot more dough? much as I might want a Wunder or reissue, those...

Re: Oktava MC012 Swivel Joints

I have seen the blue hummingbird mics but have yet to hear one or seen many reviews. Have you used them?

Besides, I have a ton of okatava 012s, seems more economical to buy a $70ish swivel joint than a hummingbird that seems to go for twice that used

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

just scored a UA 2108!! had one in my studio years ago, but left with a studio partner. bummed as it was discontinued and the rare instances they popped up on ebay, they were ridiculously expensive - I saw one go for $3k a few months back. when this one popped up for $1500, i didn't wanna wait. thou...
