the software doesn't sound like anything. but the digital interfaces do. i find they have a lot more high end on tape, and super low end as well. bigger frequency response (as opposed to my tascam 388), BUT, there's missing info. Zoom in super close on a digital wave form. there are literally chunks...

the 500 series. more color and tonal variation. the api mid forward sound is akin to rock, i don't record rock. i feel the more variety, the better you'd be able to cover all the bases.

just ran the stereo outs into my mbox, and listened through that output, no pops or clicks! so it must just be noisy monitor outs and headphone outs, i can live with that for now (repaired later maybe). But, HOLY COW, that tone through my mbox is exactly what i've been searching for. warm, thick, co...

after a thorough cleaning of the heads, pinch roller, and whole tape path, my machine sounds a lot better. noise is gone with dbx, and very little without. but there still persists some occaisional intermittent pops when i use headphones or the monitor outs. they don't register on the recordings or ...

well i got my tascam 388 last night. i'm so excited :) it looks and seems to be in almost mint condition. the previous owner had it for 15 years and used it a handful of times. here's a picture http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/6320/img0181gg.jpg the heads look almost new, barely used. http://img19...

what would be a resonable offer on this?

i'm not going to bid (just bought a mint unit and picking it up sunday), just wondering more for my own knowledge than anything.

a PM is fine too if you don't wish to disclose.

68 tele is killer man!! that's what billy cox used with hendrix :)

try swapping tubes (if they aren't all originals) as well, i was able to get a tighter low end with some newer tubes (JJ's i think).

what a great amp, i miss mine and that wooliness it had

buy a vintage fender jazz or precision to pair it with :) i used to own a 1965 b15, was a nice little amp. i have a vintage sennheiser 421 that sounds killer with that amp (or my current 72 orange or120). i usually do a DI with the thru jack to amp with a mic and record 2 track and blend. i keep the...

what outboard gear compliments the 388 well? I'm thinking about compressors (dbx 160xt), preamps (Art Pro Channel), and maybe a spring reverb unit (vanamps, some old ebay finds).

what have you found pairs well with it?

for vintage analog hardware machines try roland tr-606 or boss dr-55. for a newer machine that's analog try the mfb-522 (used). software try Boom, it comes with all versions of pro tools, you just need a midi controller to trigger it. i own a acidlab miami, which is a clone of the classic analog rol...
