the 500 series. more color and tonal variation. the api mid forward sound is akin to rock, i don't record rock. i feel the more variety, the better you'd be able to cover all the bases.

just ran the stereo outs into my mbox, and listened through that output, no pops or clicks! so it must just be noisy monitor outs and headphone outs, i can live with that for now (repaired later maybe). try swapping tubes (if they aren't all originals) as well, i was able to get a tighter low end with some newer tubes (JJ's i think).

what outboard gear compliments the 388 well? I'm thinking about compressors (dbx 160xt), preamps (Art Pro Channel), and maybe a spring reverb unit (vanamps, some old ebay finds).
