The big ball mic is actually a windscreen on what looks like a short body 47. I've got this 1960 British "Manual of Sound Recording" and it shows lots of 47s and C12's in use at the BBC with those windscreens. What's that big ball of mic that Curtis is using?: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/...

Coast Recording Equipment in LA does a lot of rentals to the movie/tv/commercial production world. There was a prop house called "20th Century Props" in Los Angeles that closed down recently, I went to the going out of business sale and there was a 1" 8 track MCI deck, mulled it over in my sleep tha...

I am in the same boat, a space in a large reharsal studio downtown and a smaller setup at home. I keep the 002R at the space and an Mbox at home, and shuttle my good preamps and things back and forth in an API lunchbox. The real key has been spending enough time at the rehearsal space to know when m...

Nashville Folks: Hope you are ok
There isn't really an appropriate forum for this, just wanted you guys in Nashville to know that the rest of the country hasn't forgotten about you, and hope that you, your families, your homes and your gear are safe.

That is a good sound, isn't it? But you really need a dummy load. Operating a tube amplifier without a load attached will cause the output transformer to overheat, short out, and melt. This is one reason to never loan a tube amp to anybody. I found that out the hard way with my 68 bandmaster. Pullin...

I really like the 25 wtt hifi amplifier by heathkit. Mine has Daystrom tubes in it and they are still rocking. I have almost the same amp! Except mine is stereo and uses EL84's. My grandfather built it! Grandpa had good taste in tubes because it's full of 60s Mullards. Yes. A quad of mid 60s Mullar...

IMO vocalists that don't have the lyrics done or like to write them at a later stage should develop the ability to do a guide vocal with nonsense syllables. I do this all the time and often my stream-of-consciousness rambling will result in a phrase or idea that makes the rest of the lyrics come to...

My particular space echo won't fully erase 456, but works fine with some Scotch 206 I had lying around. I have a few different tape loops I use, the 206 works for clean stuff, but my favorite is a piece of Realistic Concertape with a bunch of splices in it and parts where the oxide is flaking off. T...

This past Saturday I was tasked with recording lead vocals on NINE songs for an LA punk band called Die Fast. I had some mics already set up (EV 664, SM57, MD421, V69, and SM7b). The singer showed up at 2pm, by 2:05 we had decided that the SM7b was going to be the one, he knew which order to do the ...

HEY! I've been sitting at the bar at the Roost for 5 years waiting for you guys to show up! I've subsited on popcorn and PBR all this time, sleeping under the crappy plastic dartboard, and knitting new clothes out of the ironic thrift store sweaters that get left behind every night. The only downsid...

Great score! Hamfests and computer fests are great places to look for old gear. I scored my Vox Jaguar organ (with case top, legs AND original leg case) a few years ago at a hamfest in Florida for $25. At first glance I though the price tag said $250, which I would have been willing to pay, but it w...

The sound of gray
I read in here over and over again about using a "bright" sounding mic on "dull" sounding sources and "dark" sounding mics on "bright" sources. Or a tube pre to warm up a cold synth track. Are we* just trying to achieve gray? In film photography, if you use a light meter on a white snowy field it wi...
