For a while I was trying to decide which c414 was right for me. The price for the vintage ones seemed impractical for my budget. After listening to the comparisons at: http://www.trustmeimascientist.com/2011/09/05/curing-condenser-confusion-an-audio-history-of-the-akg-c-414/ ... I decided that the d...

Haha, bass into a DI, into a full channel(pre, EQ), into a group, mixed with a mic into a preamp, into a full channel, into a group, seems like a lot of clutter to me. (My outboard pre's are much better than my mixer channels too, so I want to use those on the mic) The AT device can be had for abou...

Looks like there's a kindle version of Issue 96 available. Wish it preserved the layout and images, but at least it's something for us Android people.

In reaper, you can apply your "mastering" effects on input if you like and record directly to mp3 or wav. Personally I'm not sure why you'd want to, but it's an option. Here's an ART USB interface with spdif input for under $100: http://www.fullcompass.com/product/415549.html If you have a modern An...

The Avenson STO-2 are what you're looking for. Same type of mic as the ecm800 and earthworks, priced between those two. I think they're only sold in pairs:

I have a Stellar ST-51 and a 55. Not worthy. However, the St-31 is my go-to snare mic. Never used anything better. Great rear rejection of the hat too. Got that tip from Michael Wagner. Those sell at banjo center for about $70. I think you're thinking of sterling, which seemed to pick on some of th...

I've re-fallen in love with my TOMB group buy ribbons. I took out virtually all the extra screens and mesh (I left the nylon on one side of the metal plates around the ribbon and use that side for anything that moves a lot of air) added some foam to the bottom to kill some of the ringy-ness, and I'v...

I've got the focusrite 18i8 with 4 preamps, 4 lines in, plus ADAT & SPDIF ins for extra inputs. The sound quality is pretty good, and you can find them for < $300 new if you find a discount code for a retailer. If you want a lot of outs it's not the unit for you, but for my needs it works pretty well.

[Please ignore this post if being wildly off topic offends you] In San Francisco the other day, I passed a food truck whose sign said something about shawarma. I felt like testing my intestinal fortitude, so I walked up to the window and asked for some questionable meat wrapped in a half stale pita....
