Thanks for the tip -- the Lauten mics have intrigued me for a while, glad to hear that the Horizon is worth checking out! Just snagged a 4041 on eBay, we'll see how that goes....

I prefer the PR40 to the e602 -- I find it to be a little bit softer and less aggressive, while still forceful and articulate. That said, the e602 is pretty awesome. I have the e602-II, which is generally less favored around here than the original e602, but it still sounds really good on rock kick d...

The most interesting thing to me is that the singer himself picked the tube mic that ostensibly fared worst in the poll. I have certainly seen my share of skepticism re: shootouts, and I understand it for sure, but I can't imagine a better way to get a singer psyched up and performing well.

DUDE, SCOTT WEILAND LIKES IT!!!1111 I've actually been experimenting with M/S recording, using an omni condenser as the mid mic and a figure-8 ribbon as the side mic -- OR a directional ribbon as the mid mic and a figure-8 condenser as the side mic -- and I've had pretty good luck with both! (Esp. w...

Though I think the point Joel was trying to make -- and it is a good point -- is that if you are really, truly broke it sometimes makes more sense to save up for something that will really improve the quality of your recordings than to buy a lesser item in the heat of the moment. Had I ...

+1 for the Avensons. I was always a big proponent of the cardioid-mics-on-cymbals approach to drum overheads, until I used a borrowed pair of these on a couple songs. Barely wound up using the close mics at all..... http://mbvmusic.com/mp3/gethimeathim_-_hearts_away.mp3 if anybody's interested. Drum...
