If you want to do it right, forget 'cost-effective' and get 'great' - - it's not that much more expensive, and will be cheaper than buying a crappy one, then replacing it with something great later.

Gee, I wonder if Arthur Clarke gets royalties when his story gets downloaded...

I mean, if one is gonna bitch about MP3s, maybe one should consider other forms of piracy too.

Putting a single number on mic pickup polar patterns is sort of useless. It's like asking how bright the sun will shine tomorrow - - in the shadow of the moon, it'll be 0% bright, but in the plains, it'll be 40%t. And if you are on Mercury, it'll be 97%. The pickup of a mic, from a given direction, ...

This sort of reminds me of a scam my roommate was involved in - - He found an ad in Popular Mechanics: "Make hundreds of dollars addressing envelopes!!! Details for $10!!!" He sent in the $10, and got a letter instructing him to put an ad in a national magazine with the tagline "Make hundreds of dol...

Poly caps are by far better. Tantalums may work, but must be tested to verify their effect on the sound (THD & intermod over dynamic range would be good things to check), since the dielectric absorption properties vary with the brand, size, body type and a few other things. This can, in some situati...

I generally never have problems with distortion on my mix bus, because my board (an old RAMSA) is set up to have 8 dB of headroom after the peak LED lights. It is always a good idea though to run a few test tones through the setup before starting a mix so that everything before the monitor amplifier...

It's good to hear the WD stuff is poor. I've had issues with Maxtors too.

FWIW, I've heard extensive repeated horror stories about TigerDirect - - My advice is to avoid them and buy from a more reputable vendor, like NewEgg.com.
