Re: Summit Audio 2BA-221 - novice operating question...
Question #1: Can I not use the preamp with this mic? Or could it be a problem somewhere else? The more I rode the gain or the tube output, the more prominent the buzzing became. I wasn't sure if I should try a new mic cable (even though it seems to work fine with the Bluebird). It's weird, but afte...

As per the 'basketball' dilemma. Any kick drum specific mic I have used can get it, it just is a question of placement. I could play you ten different projects I have recorded with that mic in kick duty and you wouldn't think any of them have basketball kick sounds. Just relating my experience. I d...

I don't think the D6 has any versatility at all. That thing has the most aggressive smile curve I've ever seen on a mic. Mega hyped lows, highs and almost no mids. It speaks one language: metal. I haven't found that to be the case, at all. In fact, I have had a D6 in front of, behind, inside, next ...

Thank you everyone for your help. In the end, we went with a 635a on a table stand in front of each person. It worked quite well and the client was happy with how it sounded. The recording was an informal 2 hour round table discussion. The omni pattern certainly saved us on a number of occasions, as...

ditto omni laapels or omni boundarys. 635s could also work. In a pinch 58s would work fine if you could keep everyone on-mic. For 20 people, use what you have! Are you able to record 20+ tracks at once on this gig? Keep in mind if you're mixing after the fact you can favor the mic of whoever's spea...

Omni sounds like the ticket to me... I'm not sure what kind of phase problems you're worried about, but it's multiple mics that cause phase problems, not multiple sources. One 635 in the middle of the table, or possibly two spaced across, should provide good coverage and minimize phase issues. I ha...

recording a 10 person roundtable.
I'm going to be doing a recording of 10 - 20 people sitting around a conference table. I'm having trouble deciding on which mic to use. I'd like to go with something that is inexpensive, good sound quality for broadcast and isn't susceptible to handling noise (though hopefully people will just leave...

Fascinating. Is there an ass-miking technique out there as well ? There is actually. I like to put a mic (often a 57) behind the throne, between the throne and the tom, pointing perpendicular to the kit. I once did a live recording and there was a guitar amp miced by the kit for a different band. T...

I've had the opposite experience with 57s on an AC15. I really hate 57s on almost any amp I try them on. The one exception is my '90s AC-15. I place it off axis, between the center and the edge of the speaker cone, about 6 inches out from the grill. I find this captures the amp better than most othe...
