Weird, I actually know one of the other folks who won. The Stephen Hudson fella. Right town, right first name; does that mean I almost won?

I once got a great ride sound by using an LDC on the floor tom, either from direct bleed or reflections off the drum head. I imagine this only works when the ride is set pretty low near the tom, but that day it worked beautifully.

Re: d

Miles Davis is the Eric Clapton of Jazz. Sort of. I would have loved to see Monk kick his ass. Well, if by that you mean that he was at the forefront of the invention of a new genre (sub-genre?) about four times in his career (cool, hard bop, modal, fusion), then yeah, I guess he would be about the...

Thelonius Monk interrupts Milt Jackson's intro to ask when Miles wants him to come in. They reportedly had some conflict because Miles didn't want Monk to comp behind his solo. He got his wish on most of tunes on that record.

This is from the FAQ section on the Reamp website: Question - Some people say I can use a passive direct box in reverse for reamping. Is this true? Answer - ? No. This would not work because of the large level differences between a microphone level signal and a line level signal. On the direct box t...

I agree, it sounds very good. I like the guitar sounds on Waking. Nice "Hollywood ending" chords (b6 b7 1). Maybe something I would have done differently on that one was have less room mic on the drums during the verses, and then back in on the chorus. I know doing that is a cliche, but it's probabl...

Thanks for the kind words. Regarding the time issue mentioned, I didn't really scrutinze small details like that because I was so pleased with that take, but I could see how that would tighten it up a little. Rhodes, drums, and bass were cut live, and they nailed the grove on that one.

This song is from my band Bright Size Life's new EP.

Get Out

I think it's brilliant, but I'm biased.

The kick sound from Rage Against the Machine's Evil Empire is one of my all time favorites. I guess that's included in Chris' mention of Andy Wallace. Listen to any song on that album.

I remembered this thread.

I use a guy in Dallas named George Geurin at DES Mastering, and a few weeks ago at least he was on about a 1 week turnaround. He is inexpensive and he's good. He just mastered my band's EP and it sounds like this.

Thanks Fletcher. I didn't realize that that was just another term for such a common thing. The particular effect on Thom Yorke's voice to which I was referring can be heard in this , along with a lot of other songs. I can see now that is probably how it is done, in this case the delay time is really...
