Could playing back the tracks into a nice room a recording it with a couple mics do the trick?

Are the optical ins and outs on most Apple computers also S/PDIF? I have a TOSlink cable that I use with my MBP sometimes -- is this S/PDIF?

I wonder if the fact that he did a lot of backup singing as well contributes in some way to the creation of that space you're talking about.

Roscoe's suggestion reminds me of Peter Gabriel's fourth album, which they purposefully avoided cymbals on. They even used aerosol cans for hi-hats, if memory serves.
