I don't have a modded RME interface, but I do have a modded DIGI 002 interface, and I am very happy with the improvement - mic pres sound 100x better, line ins and conversion is much improved as well. Red Type B -> Buzz or Hamptone -> La2 or 1176. Somewhat of a starting point then change mic/pre/comp to suit song if necessary.

I don't know for certain if the residue will conduct electricity, but I'd say no. WD40 definitely leaves behind nasty residue - it's essentially naphtha and mineral oil.
