Omnis on toms
I’m thinking about this, maybe try it this weekend. I put up a Stager SR2N ribbon over the kit for a mono overhead. Dark, focused sounding. I’m thinking about putting Omni Oktava 012’s on the rack and floor Tom for a bit of stereo on fills. And they’ll be right under the crash and ride for stereo. A...

Re: Curiosity about 1/2" 16-tracks w/ RCA inputs
I have Fostex 5030 8-channel -10 +4 converter in the attic. Let me know if you want it. I think I’ve probably got 8 channel Hosa rca snakes I could throw in. Message me if that sounds helpful, I’m in DC.

Re: Curiosity about 1/2" 16-tracks w/ RCA inputs
I had Fostex 8 and 16 track decks back in the day. When “everybody” started using ADATs they were going pretty cheap. Best mixer I had for that was a Studiomaster. I liked it more than Mackie. The first mixer was a Fostex made to go with those decks. It actually sounded better than the Mackie but wa...

Triad Orbit quick release barrels
In the last week I ordered a few of these. I have Sony c38b’s on drum OH duty. It’s a useful mic I could use for lots of things. But I’m too lazy to unscrew it and put it on something else. So there’s a quick release on one of them now. Also on a ribbon mic I want to move between overhead and other ...

Re: Recording Vocal Tracks without headphones
This sounds like a fun experiment—monitor in mono with on speaker polarity flipped. I think I can do this with the Drawmer CMC3 I’m using to run monitors. Next time I’m singing on one of my own demos I’ll give it a try.

Re: Mic Stand & Cable Organizer Wall
Looks great. I’m in a basement with open rafters. The music side has rock wool between the joists, but elsewhere mic stands go up in between the joists. Patch cables are on a cable hanger, mic cables are in a drawer, each in its own gallon ziploc bag, no tangles.

Re: A drum bus compressor odyssey
Lately I’ve been positioning a Stager ribbon 18” away from the snare shell, 1’ from the kick. That’s going through Soundtoys Devil Loc and maybe saturation on top of that. Trying to bring that up under the rest of the kit. Trying to get a little more body in the sound. GS is pretty depressing theses...

First new thang in a while -- ordered a used RED DI today, should have it next week. I've played bass through the REDDI at other studios, now I'm a-gonna have one here.

Re: best method for cleaning pinch roller?
Im going through a box of Type II cassettes i got from Delta Media Long ago. when those are gone i have a brick of tapes from Tapes.Com to get into. I’ve also got a bunch of NOS TDK’s that I guess I’m saving for special occasions or something. Tapes.com was pretty cheap. I ordered c-47’s, which had ...

Re: best method for cleaning pinch roller?
I have two 4-tracks. Tascam 424 II has been solid and reliable. This week I’m picking up my Peavey MCR-4 from a repair shop, it was not running at consistent speed. The belts had been replaced. The repair guy says the hardened pinch roller wasn’t gripping the tape well, but cleaning should help. I m...

Re: best method for cleaning pinch roller?
Just ordered the Athan stuff. I’m still using 4-tracks sometimes, and one of the pinch rollers has turned into a hard, crystallized puck.

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges
That’s terrible. I met him once in Baltimore, we chatted briefly.
I’m originally from Athens, GA, and knew Dave Barbe and John Keane a bit, reading drumsound’s first post.
He was probably in his 50’s? Seemed like he was kinda my age.

Re: Critique drum sound?
I set it up tonight but we haven’t listened to it yet. What the internet said was point it straight down over the right shoulder between snare and rack Tom. I guess if I point it at the snare will it pick up the ride and floor tom enough? But @morespaceecho it sounds like you’ve done this before. I’...

Re: Critique drum sound?
It’s the tube sdc, ma-100. The drummers playing lightly, I’m not needing a pad. But I should find out if there is one.
