Thanks, man. I actually already ordered the super distortion. I couldn't wait. I do play metal too but I tend to lead more towards a classic rock sound and read that the DiMarzio was better at that. If it ends up not suiting me I'll probably swap it with the JB in my LP as that's just a backup guita...

I just downloaded soundsoap yesterday to clean up some transfers I did of a bunch of random recordings made on a hand held tape recorder. It worked pretty damn well. The tape was so noisy (might have something to do with the fact that the tascam it was played back on is in really rough shape) that I...

Ok, all this talk about Metallica got me to netflix "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica". When James is cutting vocals, am I crazy or is that tape machine they keep cutting to 16 track half inch? I kept thinking it must be 1" but it looked too thin! It was likely a Sony PCM-3324 or 3348. Th...

My recent cheap but great bass secret weapon is the Electro Harmonix Black Finger pedal. I run it line level while mixing. It gives you some nice opto compression and a good amount of mid-range growl. Both help seat the bass in the mix in a big way. It's probably one of the best $100 I ever spent. ...

The bass guitar itself does make a huge difference. I'm recording a band right now and the bass player plays a babinga (type of wood) warwick. That thing has crazy low end. I'm miking his cab and taking a DI off the head. That's the first time I actually liked the way a di sounded. But, shit, I'm ha...

I always wondered if Lars worked really hard to get those drums down, got the record out and felt really good, then heard Reign In Blood and went "oh... " I bet. You did know they had to loop a drum part in To Live Is To Die, right? He couldn't keep up that double bass long enough. Go back an...

question for people who record metal: presumably your drummers all play double bass. do you usually have two bass drums or do they use a double pedal on one? i ask because of the pic of lars' kit on the AJFA sessions, where he has two kicks. this seems crazy to me, wouldn't it be way easier to have...
