Re: when was phantom ppower 'invented'?
Sending power over signal lines is a practice as old as the phone company. But this type of powering is known as "simplex" and is differential, meaning the two conductors of the balanced signal pair are at different DC potentials. This type of powering was also used with some mics and can still be f...

Re: another cheap mic pre
Does that mean it won't have enough juice to power a LDC? Quite possibly, depending on the mic. Do you think I could combine the two phantom powers to have one non-phantom channel and one 36 volt channel? Nope. There's only one 18-volt supply that feeds both channels. There are two feeds, but there...

Re: another cheap mic pre
looks a bit scary to use. like this, "THE INPUT MUST BE BALANCED FOR PROPER OPERATIONS. Failure to do so will short the phantom supply to ground." Dude, that's true of any phantom-powered preamp. I'm amazed that nobody here has heard of Sescom. Y'all must be newbies ;) Sescom has been around for ag...

Liberal is now synonymous with "enemy sympathizer?"
That's funny. I'm a liberal, yet I would just as soon nuke Iraq right now. Imagine that .
Good thing I'm not president, I guess

Re: Make your own pizza
It's true that NY'ers and Chicagoans can get pretty territorial about their pizza. I don't get involved in those arguments because, to me, NY-style and Chicago-style pizza are so vastly different that it's pointless to compare them. They're both delicious. Of course, when I hear the word "pizza", I ...

Re: Make your own pizza
Matt, I confess: I cheated and bought dough from a local bakery. It was refrigerated, so I put it in a lightly oiled bowl, covered with saran wrap and let it come to room temp as I prepared the other ingredients. Next time, I might try making my own dough. I've heard that Evelyne Slomon's dough reci...

Make your own pizza
Hey, this IS the off-topic forum, right? I'm psyched about my successful attempt to make a Totonno/Lombardi old-style New York pie at home, and I just had to tell somebody ;) http://electronicdave.myhosting.net/miscimages/pizza.jpg The crust isn't quite as charred as you'd get from an 800-degree coa...

Oh God, here we go. You were perfectly happy with your ATI until I mentioned that it has ICs in it. Now you're asking about mods.

Drop me a PM if a NYC Tapeopper gathering happens, mic shootout or not. I met a couple of you at AES, but it'd be fun to meet some more.

All right, I must be getting old--actually, I know I'm getting old, since today's my birthday--but what the heck is "mathcore?"

Re: Holy Shit!
The ATI stuff is good. It doesn't have the elusive color that can make you cream your jeans, but it's a solid performer seen often in broadcast applications. We use a lot of ATI stuff at my TV studio. It's expensive new, but available cheap on the used market. Warning to hipsters: the circuits use I...

People still gate drums? I thought that went out by the '90s. I always associate that sound with (yuck) Phil Collins.
