If I put these anywhere near my Motu 828MKII they cause a really bad hum in my rig, even when they are unplugged. I literally can hold these within a foot of the 828 and all hum breaks loose. what can someone please explain to me how that would work? does unplugged mean no AC and no connection to t...

Noisy Altec 1589B output
I picked a couple of Altec 1589B mic mixers for pretty cheap awhile back. I did some minor repair to them and gave them a total recap. They're operating now but the output transformers are noisy. Checking them on the scope the signal is clean right up to the output trannys, and then noisy coming off...

I know this is gear specific, but for 2 grand you could build or find a used Hamptone HJFP2 and two used AT4050's. You get an amazing mic pre, and a stereo pair of versatile and quality microphones. That being said, in my opinion good mics are more important than good pres. It's the first part of yo...

Power conditioner 125 volts ac
I just picked up a Oneac cp1107 power conditioner at a govt. surplus sale for relatively cheap. I'm a little concerned about it's output voltage. My wall voltage measures 122 volts ac and the voltage coming out of this power conditioner is 125 volts ac. This unit is rated at 120 in/ 120 out. 125 vol...

Re: Pro VLA Repair
The possibility for problems seems MUCH LESS likely on a new unit than on a 12 year old one that may or may not be able to be fixed. Not following that logic. The price point being what it is, the time, dough and effort seems to be best spent and saved by just sucking it up and buying a new or newe...

psinglet: I'll call the places you mentioned. My favorite place in Austin to take stuff like this is Mr. Wizards, but they take quite a while to complete work [just because they're so backed up] and they can be pretty pricey. But if the unit comes back good as new for under $300 I think it's worth i...

I guess that would be the obvious answer. I'm wondering how great a job they'd do. Do they have an audio repair tech or techs fixing circuit boards that are most likely stuffed and soldered by robots? I could be wrong, but I don't think these were hand made units. Therefore, there might be someone o...

Pro VLA Repair
A friend of mine dropped one off for me to look at. It's very weak on one channel. The 12AX7 was good and there were no obvious bad solder connections. I'm suspecting that it's a bad cap but in order to get to the underside of the circuit board you have to take the whole world apart. Basically it wo...

I'm only posting this response so I'll get to my next rank sooner. Pushin' record sucks.
Hopefully I'll finally start to get taken seriously around here, unlike this newbie:

Altec mic repair
I have a couple of Altec 686A lavalier mics that I can't get open for the life of me. I heard there is a special tool Altec repairmen used to open these up with, although I wouldn't know where to even get one. The mic cable is directly connected to the mic and the insulation has become cracked and k...

I love my mid 70's Twin. I've had it 20 years and it's just such a solid amp. About 15 years ago it was modded back to being partially blackfaced. I wanted to try some new speakers and the shop I took it to mistakenly put in two 16 ohm Celestions, forming an 8 ohm load. This might be why I like it s...

A little OT. I bought a V4 on craigslist a couple of months ago for real cheap because it needed a little work and had no tubes. I finally got around to checking it out this week. The guy said the standby switch had fallen into the chassis. In actuality, someone hard wired the standby on, which expl...
