Re: McDSP Analog Channel - AC101 on every track

Ya. I think they're referring to the peak level or am I wrong? As far as boosting the track's volume, that's just how Analog Channel works; it doesn't switch on until it's meter hits the yellow. You can get there with either the input or drive, so I guess my post revolves around the balance between...

Re: Subtractive EQ

This is kind of an exaggerated example, but my "heavy music" guitar EQ curve usually looks something like this: https://reverb-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/v1494338486/EQ_xo0jjb.jpg The boosts and cuts will always fall in different places, but here's the rundown: Band 1 - high pass filter that cu...

Re: McDSP Analog Channel - AC101 on every track

And since I'm always keeping my levels at -20dB when tracking (optimal level for UA Apollo) and -18 when going into a plug, I have to really crank the input of the 101 to get it into the yellow, and then drastically lower the output to get it back to -18 for the next plug. Why is -20 optimal level ...

Re: Intelligent mixing software - mixes your song for you!?

That'd be like a robotic chef. It could make you any type of dish, but preferences and taste (literal or figurative) are so humanly subjective that it's just easier and better to have a human do it. That is, until we're all wired into the biometric data cloud. Edit: also, it'd be a nightmare trying ...

Re: Tascam 38 footswitch

Thanks. I suppose I'll try an amp switch when I get back to the studio and report back on it. I kinda doubt the sustain pedal will work but a hold-and-release punch-in switch would actually be really cool now that I'm thinking about it.... I just wanna avoid hunting down and buying the proper unit f...

Tascam 38 footswitch

The Tascam 38 has a quarter-inch footswitch input for punching in/out. I believe this is the compatible footswitch: https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVifAbO5Z5tgAKF0nnIlQ?p=Tascam+rc-30p&fr=yhs-mozilla-017&fr2=piv-web&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-017#id=3&iurl=https%3A%2F%2Freverb-res....

If something sounds shitty in the studio and good when you do it live, record it the way you do it live. Just sayin.
With a PA in the room? Probably not what you meant, but could be very cool.

Re: Glen Gould Recording

This is a really cool look at the process (I had no idea the performer had that much control over the proceedings) but man, it must have taken some patience to mix with that dude. I wish he'd just get on the other side of the board and make it happen himself! Also, funny to hear the engineer say "we...

Re: Slack snare tuning, anyone?

Not the same thing but still cool: I did a thing a few years ago where I played a large, low-tuned snare held sideways on my knee with a yarn mallet, turning the snares on and off during the part with my left hand. I think I used a dynamic mic on the batter head for tone and a small diaphragm conden...

Re: looking an uneven WAV files

It usually sounds fine; the only problem I run into is that the more extreme direction of the wave (be it + or -) hits the compressor/limiter first, giving you way less headroom than an even waveform. Also, I should edit my last post about this: it's totally fine to use a phase rotator on individual...

Re: Tape Cailb Help! run at +3 with 355nwb/m MRL

The Tape Op book (volume 2 I think) has a handy calibration chart that's helped me out A LOT. Even with the original manual for my Tascam and an MRL tape, I still referenced that chart. I think I saw a PDF of it online, but it's definitely worth buying the book.

Re: looking an uneven WAV files

are there trumpets in the mix? Sounds like the setup to one of those accordion jokes... "there's your problem right there" But yeah, instruments like that are the leading cause of asymmetrical waveforms in a study conducted by me, right now. Anything that moves a lot of air mostly in one direction ...

Re: looking an uneven WAV files

This plagued me for a long time before I figured it out. I was getting it mostly in my drum overheads with heavy bands, but also other stuff, and I couldn't make my masters loud enough because my limiter was reacting to the lopsided wave. I thought it was a DC offset problem, so I started putting DC...

I use if often for the top of the snare, because it's so low-profile and can easily sneak in under the hi-hat. Also sometimes for bottom snare, using its hypercardioid pattern to reject the kick. I never really use it "for the sound". It works fine most of the time but occasionally I do swap it out ...
