Extra Bass Tracks...

If you're bringing in a laptop, doesn't that solve your 2-bass track problems?

I want a Stylophone.

I just purchased a Shure M67 for a very nice price.

Scott's Big Band Recording...

...Nice man!

The band sounds good (a few blatty trumpets), but you're 3-mic recording is superlative. Great balance. Sounds like a nice space. "Opus..." sounds particularly nice.

Telefunken D9A and TD26

I have acquired two Telefunken vintage mics; the D9A and the TD26. They are both tape-recorder mics with low output (these were low-end items, not U87 or 47 tube mics, but still decently built consumer Telefunkens). Both "small tuchel" connectors. Changed the TD26; will change the recently acquired ...

Re: Mixing for vinyl

P.S.-- If you're mixing something that is coming out on vinyl, you may want to get in touch with Bob Olhsson, a mastering engineer in Nashville that used to mix and master for Motown in Detroit. He's extremely knowledgeable, and a very approachable guy. You could check the WOMB &/or the Gearslutz fo...

Re: Mixing for vinyl

As far as I know, the only time you _really_ have to mix bass and bass drum dead-center is for vinyl. The needle won't stay in the grooves otherwise. I've never mixed for vinyl, but I've mastered a compilation from vinyl sources, and I'm old enough to have appeared on a vinyl LP...Different world. GJ

Re: re: mono drums...

I can tell you what I'd do, but not everybody would do it that way (some people like mono drums, some people like stereo drums with a mono room or overhead, some people like stereo drums panned "audience perspective"). Actually, "audience perspective" might be just right for you, depending on what y...

re: mono drums...

That should have been "big" studio, not "bug" studio.

I'm not sure what a "bug" studio is, but it sounds kind of cool.

Re: I want mono drums, drummer wants stereo!!

The drummer may be right, in this case. I'd go with stereo drums, and either go to a single bass track, as the others have mentioned, or, lose the ear-candy track and use judicious track management to squeeze in your percussion-toy over-dubs. My preference would be to use the amp track rather than t...

Re: I am in over my head. Recording Sam Rivers big band

I would try miking with the stereo pair as an overhead room mic as high as you can realistically get it/them. Then mike each section, bearing in mind that the trumpets will continue to try and own the room. If you have any way to baffle-off section microphones from the others (or just used cardioid ...
