Re: questions from a 'newbie' to mastering (well, kinda newb
I think I'll toss in a bit for posterity. A lot of 'home recording enthusiasts' have developed the misconception over the past few years that a Mastering Engineer adds compression and EQ and maybe very rarely a smattering of reverb and charge a lot of money for it. We tend to forget that the Masteri...

Re: Soundcraft Spirit M12, your thoughts please?
Digibid was really cool up until they changed their system around about two years ago and stopped acting as an escrow company. It turns out the guys in Boston that started got in a little over their heads and had to back out quite a ways. My last purchase was such a pain that eBay is better now. But...

Re: You weren't kidding!
Bravo on the Supreme court info, it's nice to se the facts once in a while. I always just point out to people that we don't live in a democracy, we live in a republic with a representative government and the electoral college was laid out in the constitution for exactly these reasons. And if the num...

Re: You weren't kidding!
Wow, and then it turned political. I'll point out a couple things on the person who can spend $6500 on a cable: 1. He isn't starving his family for the audio stuff the way alcoholics, drug addicts and compulsive gamblers might. He probably has several homes and several cars etc. long before he has t...

Re: do you ever get sick of it
I love what I do, but I also get to work on a lot of variety. I would suggest that before you cancel everything you partake in some charity work. Go to a couple of local churches, the big old stone ones like the Catholics, Episcopalians, or Lutherans and ask if you can record their church choir or o...

Re: You weren't kidding!
Alright, I guess I have to jump in here for a moment, since I am a recording engineer and an audiophile, and I used to sell and install high-end home audio. $6500 for Nordost is kind of a rip since Cardas is much better, but honestly, that ain't the most expensive. I worked for ListenUp Audio Video ...

Re: FS: DBX 586 Preamp, EQ, Limiter stereo unit
A couple of questions since I was considering picking up one of these for the school. 1. Box, manual, etc. still around? 2. It is the 586 dual mic pre with compressors, not the 576 single channel? 3. Is there a way for me to pay with credit card or school purchase order? I am still not certain I nee...

Re: I need some knowledge...
There are lots of books on lots of subjects out there so it really depends on what angle you are trying to catch in your paper. I'll run down a few and you can feel free to ask any additional questions as you look these up. 1. Behind the Glass - I have only just started on this one and it does indee...

Re: euro vs. us AC supply
The easiest will be that world-wide gear that has switchable power supplies. The tough part is all of that stuff that has normal 110, especially those old tape machines we all love. Transformers work but not the cheap Radio Shack ones that are designed for hair driers, you want something that will p...

Re: 96khz and limiting
What did everybody forget about 88.2. The simple answer is that if you are working entirely in digital you will be sending the audio through alot of mathematical processes and you want to use the highest rate that will be the most compatible in the end. If you work through an entire project at 16/44...

Re: AKG 414
The B-ULS is a bit edgy sounding but quite adaptable. Watch it on sibilant voices or instruments with lots of upper mids and watch it on edgy sounding preamps like Mackie mixers. The TL-II is smoother and pretty close to transparent. Maybe not as invisible as an Audio Technica 4050 but pretty close ...

Re: How do you chain a compressor on a pre with no insert?
Yup.
Mic into pre, pre into comp and comp into tape. Really that is the only thing that an insert does one a stand alone mic preamp anyway. Just mind those balanced and unbalanced connections and make sure to plug everyone into the same power source.

Re: Poll: Will CD's become obsolete? By when?
It is hard to say when CDs will finally go away, though it could help to look at what else has come and gone in the last few decades. In all of these cases there are the few hold outs here and there, but for all intents and purposes and most importantly, the availability of new product, I'd say the ...

Re: Tube Mic Reccomendations?
I haven't tried the Blue mic, but they have certainly had some rave reviews. They tend to be a bit over-priced but I think that is why they have been so widely accepted at studios, funny thing about buying psychology. I own an RTT MKL101 mic with the big M-5 capsule on it that I picked up at a pawn ...

Re: Miking Brushed Drums (on a budget of course)
You're going to need at least two vintage, pre-1972 AKG C-12 mics up above the kit, fed into a couple of vintage Neve preamp channels that have been fully recapped. :D Just kidding. Though I will say that you should not try using the SM57 mics as overheads, that is a common attempt that people make ...
